Grande_assiette, my initial post assumes that the Turkish side will continue to reject a solution based on human rights, democracy and the EU acquis, as they have done until now. If they continue to treat us with such disrespect and hostility then they should expect a similar response from us sooner or later.

Two wrongs don't make one right. Only rights can make a right. The question is: Are the Turks willing to make everything right and legal based on human rights and democracy? They didn't show us such intention so far.

The Latvian example was given to show to some arrogant people in here that the balance of power does change, even when on one side is a superpower and on the other a small country, and that if they don't finally start treating us with respect, then sooner or later it will be their turn to pay in this never ending circle of blood.

I'm one of these "daft" folk who believe that the GCs will have to compromise their "rights" for a generation an adopt an Annan like solution

"rights"??? So the human right to live in your own home is a "right" according to you? Democracy is a "right" for you? No, we will not compromise our RIGHTS because some others want to gain on our expense.

Would you compromise YOUR rights and not fight for them? If you would, and if you do not demand your rights and respect then let me know so I will start treating you accordingly.

Dear Piratus

1/ You didn't specifically answer my post as to WHY the "Latvian model" you suggest is full of holes - the "new" minority are now second class citizens, through an "accident of birth "

2/ You would seem to be a Cypriot who thinks human rights were only abused from July 1974 onwards.. Until many Cypriots realise this, YES, progress will be difficult. At least in 2004, the TCs WERE willing to "trust" the majority within a compromise framework..

3/ I'm not disputing that many innocent GCs lost their homes in 74, but let's not forget the TCs and GCs that had to abandon their homes / villages / Cyprus BEFORE 74.

4/ Are you SO sure that the rump RoC's accession to the EU has turned the tables for the majority of Cypriots? Since May 2004,

1/ the EU has told the RoC that EU citizens ( who may be living in GC properties/ land) that they can enter via "illegal" ports ..
.
2/ The EU wants the TCs to be able to trade,

3/ the ECHR is giving TR another chance to "resolve" the property issue ( and they haven't dealt with one occupied property!)

4/ the Orams case, will not doubt, result in an "non result" - probably the judge will ask the original plaintiffs in the RoC court to use the ECHR suggested "local remedy", that the GCS will rightly, be mistrustful of.

By now, the reconstruction of Varosha could have been well under way, but Turke ahs refused the rights of a GC to return to her property for "military reasons"

Poor old Cyprus has always been a stepping stone for invaders, or more recently an "aircraft carrier"... Accepting Annan would have meant inward investment, and the chance over 20 years for a slow re-integration of the "tribes"... Rejection meant that international sympathies changed to the TCs.. the current "rump" RoC govt. is running out of friends..

Is the penny dropping yet?

maybe i wasnt clear. i didnt mean to link the two events, even though it seemed like it. if turkey goes after them, they'll be in conflict with the US, which is a good thing for cyprus.

I think that maybe you put too much emphasis on Cyprus, when it comes to US Foreign Policy decisions.. Unfortunately, for Cyprus, TR is strategically and numerically more important. :(

Ergodgan, has to win elections coming soon and he has to "look" tough..

This is why the UN /EU are trying work work out a deal to allow the TCs to open their ports ( under UN control) to stop the "train crash" in December. ( TR will open ports / airspace to RoC ships / planes and the TCs will get "rewarded" for voting YES to Annan.0.. sticking my neck out.. this WILL Happen, whether the RoC like it not not...
!

I hate it on the news when it says, GC's rejected the reunification plan, and the TC's did not, withought saying why...it wasn't as simple as that...
