according to the Turkish Cypriot press yesterday (i do not know which newspaper it was) , a Turkish Cypriot private school in kyrenia has made compulsory the learning of the greek language.

once again , the private sector is more progressive than the public one!

my greatest respect to those teachers / principal / business man who took that decision. my greatest respect also to the parents!

lets hope , some private school in the south will follow.
what would you say the reactions of gc parents would be ?

(can anyone share more info with us? the name of the school and if that was introduced at junio or highschool level ?

I agree with you cypezokyli! It can greatly improve the relationship between GCs and TCs if we speak each others language. In our public schools Turkish language is one of the electives now. Is this the same for the TC schools?

I think a great deal more needs to be done. An elective is just not good enough. All children ought to be taught both languages at school, this will debvelop commonalities and respect and not to mention progress. How wonderful will it be to be able to speak both languages. I simply wish I was encouraged to learn Turkish as a primary school child prior to my family leaving Cyprus shortly after the war. I think Turkish is a beautiful language.

totally agree with you humanist. I also would have loved to speak Greek. I think its a beautiful language. my father speaks it fluently. I would not even know how to ask for a glass of water. It is sad that I left Cyprus at a time that I would have easily learnt the language.

whatever the outcome of the Cyprus problem schools on both sides should start teaching each others language.

thank you for agreeing with me mrfromng. unfortunately it takes people who have immigrated from Cyprus to see the benefits of peace and love and living together in a united Cyprus. I congratulate the school for their efforts to bring the two communities closer.

the only Turkish I know is teshekkur edrim and gusel. not sure of the spelling

When the Cypriots start to speak Turkish, it's going to be the day that the world will melt... And that's not the near future, I can assure you!!!

Turkish will never ever be a Cypriot language. Mistakes of 1960 will never be made again. We should not encourage an occupant element in our country if we want progression.
Those in the north have done the correct thing, trying to learn the language of Cyprus....

i am currently learning turkish, and it is really a beautiful language.
not to mention, that precisely bc i am a cypriot i can understand more about the language in comparison to the fellow german students who are also learning.

You can understand rousfetti and assihtir and some words.

How else Greek is similar to Turkish?

Turkish and German use the Latin alphabet so those languages are more similar.

First of all, since you like playing smart, take this up ur a$$:
Chrysi Avgi was disbanded over 6 months ago...

The "new" name(some members stayed) is "Metopo Neoleas" :)

And second, everyone in here knows that you are a traitor of Cyprus, you don't need to clarify it with every post...

And the politically, historically and geographically correct name is:
Turkish-Muslims settlers in northern Cyprus

"Turkish Cypriots" is something that some British reporters invented so that they didn't have to use the correct term. And Turkey liked that, as it convienently 'proves' the 'rightful' existence of the "TRNC" Therefore, a "Turkish Cypriot" is considered to be a citizen of the "TRNC". Therefore, "Turkish Cypriots" do not exist as a race, simply because there's no turkish state in Cyprus, but just the Republic of Cyprus, which is under Turkish occupation.

P.S: Further congratulations to those that try to make the illegal settlers learn Greek in order to learn about the island's history as well...
