Legitimise Turkey's Role?

Might I seek views from members on the following.

Lets suppose that elements of a "solution" includes within it the legitimising of the presence of a large garrison of the Turkish army on the Island, as I'm sure some would say, in order to protect minority rights, promote stability etc.

Up to now, the continuing occupation has been almost universally condemned and although the buffer zone is, in places, only a few yards wide, Turkey's influence on the affairs of the Republic has been, to some extent, limited.

What would be the effect of legitimising Turkey's role, on the affairs of the Island as a whole?

I think they are allowed 600 soldiers according to the 1960 constitution. Thats too many if you ask me. We can see now how the Turkish army controls the pseudo state. If we legitimize their presence then they will control us as well and we will be pseudo state also.

Nicely thought out:?

I would agree that a legitimised Turkish role would increase that country's influence immeasurably and that would worry me. I do not think I would raise objections to a sizeable interim stability force from fellow EU member states (not Greece) in place of the forces from Greece and Turkey and I do not think I would object to a sizeable reduction in the National Guard as well.

I agree with you bill. No problem with peace forces from third countries for a while but not Turkish army on Cyprus!

turkey and greece get the hell out of cyprus we dont want them there we never invited them there they are no friends of cyprus they are the enemies of cyprus, what i like to see if total ban on all diplomatic military and social involvement to do with greece and turkey.also with america and britain these four nations should be expelled from cyprus for good and a thousand years is to soon to reasume diplomatic ties withtese four countries
