I do not believe that Erdoğan wishes to join the EU, either. He is a very deceptive, manipulative individual - and ultimately just a puppet.

For him it’s a challenge to see if he qualifies for what he seemingly considers to be a prestigious club, but I doubt he would actually want to become a member once he gets the approval.

Getting the EU's thumbs up would be like Turkey winning the Euro in his eyes, and then he’ll probably stick his finger in the air at them!

...but I doubt his dream will ever be realised.

Maybe but he will have to re-consider if this goes against Turkey.

Yes, I saw that yesterday and it’s definitely an interesting development that may have the potential to terminate Turkey’s bid.

As I see it either Turkey joins the EU and so does not have to negotiate its own FTAs with other countries or it gives up the Customs Union so that it does not have to adopt ithe EU's common trade policy (whatever that is). Much of Turkey's foreign direct investment was probably made on the assumption it would join the EU or at least benefit from the Customs Union.

Maybe this paying lip service to EU membership is Erdogan's way of keeping foreign investors happy.

That is exactly what it is, well done, and it serves a number of useful, strategic purposes, and will be abandoned when no longer needed.

There is simply NOTHING that Turkey produces that the EU requires and cannot manufacture/grow itself. Their white goods are unreliable, their clothes are so shoddy they are probably singularly responsible for the middle classes turning away from Marks and Spencer and their dried figs and sultanas are full of grit and dirt!

Unfortunately, it's mostly the southern European countries that suffer the most from the EU trading with Turkey.
