Would you support a boycott of the 2012 Olympic Games, in London, conditional upon the return of the Parthenon Marbles?

No Marbles No Flame - 2012 London Olympic Games

A clash of cultures? Or the rightful use of Classical Culture to restore the culture of the classics?

Good Morning young lady

My personel opinion is that the games should be given a permanent home in the birthplace of the Olympics. Under the auspices of the IOC.

As to the marbles being returned of course the should but I do not feel the London Olympics should be made conditional on their return.

If we used this type of thing as a benchmark then we could say the los Angeles Olympcs should only have been given on condition of return of Native american lands and I am sure we could find a simalar thing about any other Games.

Therefore I have voted No (sorry dear)

Hello favoured Brit! I respect your honesty and opinion. :D (and bravery)

However, there is a little flaw in your thinking which I must quickly rectify, lest you unduly influence others.

I agree you cannot use the Olympic Games as a political tool to right all the grievances of all the people in the world (would be great, but it won't work and it goes against Olympic principles to use it as a tool and not an end in itself for peace). But in this ONE particular instance when culture (Olympic Games) can be used to reunite Culture (Parthenon Marbles) - Nike and Athena - wouldn't it be seen as elevating all humanity to a higher calling?

The British Museum can view it as a face-saving act of Charity and it breaks the vicious cycle of obstinacy ....

Shouldn't have to be viewed as an act of charity......The marbles belong in the Parthenon Full Stop so they should be returned

Greece has more pressing issues to be concerned with than with oracles stupid aspirations.

Of course, any "pressing issue" should make the Hellenic Republic sack the Minister for Culture and impel all Greeks to turn into barbarians.

I guess they'll retract this old letter, now, and apologise for their daring hedonism ...

OK The Brits are split 50:50. The 3 non-Brits who disagree are probably Turks and Bananiot. :D

Now, here's a little something to help those sit-on-the-fence Brits to commit:

Lord Byron is on record as calling Elgin a vandal! And here's a little extract from Byron's Canto (the second) bemoaning Greece's plight in those hands ...

What! shall it e'er be said by British tongue
Albion was happy in Athena's tears?
Though in thy name the slaves her bosom wrung,
Tell not the deed to blushing Europe's ears;
The ocean queen, the free Britannia, bears
The last poor plunder from a bleeding land:
Yes, she, whose generous aid her name endears,
Tore down those remnants with a harpy's hand.
Which envious eld forbore, and tyrants left to stand.

XIV.

Where was thine aegis, Pallas, that appalled
Stern Alaric and Havoc on their way?
Where Peleus' son? whom Hell in vain enthralled,
His shade from Hades upon that dread day
Bursting to light in terrible array!
What! could not Pluto spare the chief once more,
To scare a second robber from his prey?
Idly he wandered on the Stygian shore,
Nor now preserved the walls he loved to shield before.

XV.

Cold is the heart, fair Greece, that looks on thee,
Nor feels as lovers o'er the dust they loved;
Dull is the eye that will not weep to see
Thy walls defaced, thy mouldering shrines removed
By British hands, which it had best behoved
To guard those relics ne'er to be restored.
Curst be the hour when from their isle they roved,
And once again thy hapless bosom gored,
And snatched thy shrinking gods to northern climes abhorred!

I Agree ....... But you can keep the flame ...... We'd rather have the billions of £'s in bail out cash back from the lay about , workshy , socialist parasites.

But seriously ..... Send the marbles back with a thankyou, now fucking shut up get back to work and pay your own way note.

The Olympics are always a major financial loss for anyone who hosts them; for Greece it was the final nail in the coffin!

As for the Greek marbles, Britain should return EVERYTHING she has plundered from around the world, evacuate immediately and compensate all counties she is currently occupying, and start concentrating on her INTERNAL affairs for once!

What a disgraceful country!
