Guss Hellim is what we call halloumi. Well when it comes to cooking and food I have an entirely non-partisan view- I eat everything that tastes good. And having lived in Egypt for some years I can see where we both borrowed, stole, took all kinds of things we call "ours". All Mediterranean cultures owe the Arabs more than we are willing to admit.

Now what is this about yoghurt? I knew about the halloumi/hellim registration. Is someone trying to "patent" Turkish coffe and yoghurt too? How are the Greeks and Bulgarians taking it, they both claim yoghurt as their own too you know!

The donkey is definitely Greek-proof. Mainland Greeks call us Cypriot donkeys (gaidouri Kypreiko) as an insult, they would not ever claim it as their own. My problem is to design a line rendering of the donkey that can go on a flag, something like the Canadian maple leaf. Would make a grand flag!

Just thought of something re the donkey symbol- it is the symbol of the US Democratic Party. Do you reckon they would sue us? Americans are such litigious maniacs you got to expect everything from them.

You have a twisted imagination. I asked a simple question, thats all. After discussions of the respective flags, it is something I noticed/ or did not notice. Stop putting ideas into my mind.

Ok. that was the flag designed by Mr Ismet Guney, my teacher. Its unfortunate that his skills in art did not pass on to me. I was more of the musical kind of guy.

Mr Deniz,
have a look , what is after ? your teacher !

Jean Christou, Cyprus Mail, 19 June 2006:

İsmet Guney, the Turkish Cypriot artist and teacher who designed the Cyprus flag is seeking payment from the government, 46 years after Archbishop Makarios chose his design to represent the new Republic of Cyprus.According to reports in the Turkish Cypriot press yesterday Guney claims that Makarios promised him £20 a year for designing the flag but he was never paid.

He [Guney] now wants his money plus compensation for copyright usage. The total by now would amount to £920 after 46 years.

The reports said Guney had hired a Greek Cypriot law firm to push his case but it did not specify which one. His lawyers have already sent a letter to President Tasssos Papadopoulos giving him ten days to respond and meet the payment. If he receives no reply Guney said he was prepared to take the case to the European Court of Human Rights.

Responding to the reports yesterday, left-wing AKEL spokesman Andros Kyprianou said that if such an agreement existed between Guney and Makarios it should be looked into by the government.

Thanks Halil. Yes we did see that article at the time when Kafenes was designing our new flag. Amusing isnt it, considering the sum of monies involved. At the time though that was big money.

Yes Halil, just think how much more money Ismet Guney could make from royalties, if you used the same flag in the "TRNC". You would be helping a fellow Turkish Cypriot, No.??

What do you think.??

The yellow triangle represents Cyprus, while the Red and blue lines represent both the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot people. The meaning of the overall flag is that both communities come together to forge a common path for the island. The white background represents peace.

An idealistic vision for a situation that I beleive is beyond repair, but here it is anyway...

U cant fool me, the Red is Turkey, the Blue is Greece, the Squeezed Yellow is Cyprus and the White background is Silence..
