US: changes in Annan Plan must be acceptable to both sides

The United States supports the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's settlement plan and in a manner that is acceptable to majorities on both sides of the island, State Department Deputy Spokesman Adam Ereli has stated.

Responding to questions during the daily briefing at the State Department, Ereli said that Annan has called on the parties “to reflect on last year's referenda outcome and to come up with suggestions on how to move forward”, adding that the US supports “that approach”.

Asked if the Annan plan should return revised or unrevised, he said: “look at what happened with the referenda last year and come up with ideas on how to move forward. The key notion here is that whatever they decide needs to be done in a manner that is acceptable to majorities on both sides of the island.”

Asked whether the US would accept changes decided by the two sides, the State Department official said that “if it's acceptable to both sides and if it's acceptable to Annan, you know, the goal is to have a reunification. So, obviously both sides need to buy into it.”

Erol can you give us more information? I never heard there was an agreement. About the TC school supposely they should build it 2 years ago...

One of the most authoritative accounts given for TP was by the late Andreas Ziartides in his book "without fear and passion". Ziartides knew TP inside out and in his account he lists the positive aspects of him too. He also says that TP is a Turk hater.

It is not a matter of hating Papadopoulos but a matter of judging a political person who has been around for a very ong time. These people are accountable, aren't they? There is nothing wrong in judjing their actions. In fact it is the normal thing to do in all democratic societies. Only dictators are above critisism. Christofias came back from his long holidays from down under (all paid by the taxpayers) and attacked Anastasiades for undermining Papadopoulos with his critisism. If he had his own way he would be soon sending him to Siberia.

Coming back to Papadopoulos, I did translate the relevent part of Ziartides's book on Papadopoulos in this forum some time ago and probably mikkie did not see it. Ziartides was for many years the Secretary General of PEO trade union and a prominent Central Committee of AKEL member. He was expelled from AKEL by its stalinist leadership in 1989, if I remember correctly. He was a great favourite among the TC members of PEO and I remember a few years ago in London when Ziartides met with Ahmet Sadi (TC trade unionist who was nearly killed by TMT) both cried their hearts out.

Not quite so. For many years he was the negotiator and since the late 50's he was many things, among else, vice leader of the Akritas plan, that aimed at exterminating our TC compatriots in one night! He is a known entity. I know exactly what to expect from him. He has never believed in bicommunal, bizonal federation and like Makarios he probably thinks he can play games and fool all the people all the time. At the moment the only people he fools are the GCypriots, it remains to be seen for how long more.
