Turkish and Greek troops remain on the island as per the 1959 London - Zurich Accords on a 650/950 ratio. Greek troops remain in the southern 'consituent' state and Turkish troops in the north. All troops, possibly, are to be withdrawn following Turkey's accession to the EU. Turkey acts as a guarantor state for the north and Greece for the south. There is thus no reason as to why Britain should remain a guarantor state in the event of a settlement. The ties of history (and I know this will annoy some people) and ethnicity of both Cypriot communities dictate that they have far more of a right to a Turkish and Greek security presence on the island than Britain ever does. The presence of 650 Turkish troops is a security measure, however symbolic, to allay the potential fears of the Turkish Cypriot community.

The British presence in Cyprus has nothing at all to do with internal security but strategy and as such the validity of the bases continuing to exist in a newly established Cypriot state ceases to exist, period. Both leaders should make it quite clear to the UK government that the bases should go in the event of a settlement. Does anybody know if this is being discussed by the technical committees ? Could someone also remind me what the provisions were for the future of the bases in the Annan Plan ?

A potential sticking point of a possible British withdrawal, for the Turkish Cypriot side, would be that the territory of the bases would be a part of the Greek Cypriot constituent state, thus providing such a state with more territory. This could be taken into account, understandably, by the Turkish Cypriots during negotiations about the eventual size of the northern constituent state. Could be problematic but again I can see a compromise formula here.

Wrong start. 15000 Greek soldiers(plus the National guard) will be as guarantors and no one Turkish soldier or British one will be in the Island .
If you wish a solution making you human and part of Europe go ahead, otherwise pls stop to disturb us and stay in your present Mongloian World.

You guys dont realise what armies do? They are constantly trying to think up responses to hypothetics threats. What do you think the 650 Turks and 950 Greeks will be doing in Cyprus? What they did in the past, draw up plans with fancy names and spy on each other and on us. It is a safe bet that in each contingent a large number will be intelligence and planning people. Yet you still ask for them as guarantees etc.

What guarantee do 650 soldiers provide when a single plance can reach Cyprus in 2 minutes and unload a pile of bombs! These are excuses and symbolic acts of domination over Cyprus. Whoever wants this crap is not a Cypriot.

British forces must go so we can populate Ladies mile (Kill all migrating birds), build hotels (and mini LasVegas once gambling is allowed), use Airfield as a 3rd international airport, use their marina, use their Hospital... and the mini oil refinery (i know it exists :)). I think the flat surface of a salt lake should be used to raise a LImassol City Business district...mini Manhattan :)

Dekhelia base in this case should be demolished to the ground and have a theme park built in... if not a Dinseyland, maybe a Thomas & Friends land, with mini railroad, tunnels... :)

What do you think the Brits and US will think about that? This is going to destroy the virgin birth idea of 2 politically equal states uniting as 2 component sates to form a Confederacy dead in it's tracks.

The mistake Christofias is making is going round asking for help from those that ARE the Cyprus problem itself (UK, Turkey, Greece). This is a stupid move that almost EVERY GC president has made thinking that they can take advantage of any of these wolfs for free!

The ONLY way that Cyprus will ever find justice is by her own hand. She needs to build herself up incessantly in all aspects including, industries, military, culturally, and every other way possible thus constantly upgrading her negotiating and influencing power. A good non-60s ally like France must also be preserved and well managed.

It’s the Cypriots that will liberate Cyprus and not any foreigners.

Etes - vous sur que la France est de votre part ?

as long as we have turkish, greek, and british presance on cyprus soil there will never be peace for cypriots. as long as they keep what is in the zurich agreement there will never be peace for cypriots, as long as they keep calling motherland turkey and greece, there will be no peace for cypriots,as long as they continue to think they are turks and greeks, there will never be any peace for the cypriots even though proven many times by DNA test thats conclusively proves that we cypriots are alike and we do not share any similarities with greece or turkey
sooooo what is the solution to cyprus ??????????????????????

As long as u r not aware of the realities of Cyprus, our region and the world; 2 seperate states will be the solution of Cyprus problem. U don't trust Turkish army, TCs don't trust national guard(btw which nation it represents with their Hellenic symbol?) controlled by Greek army. Simple as that...
