heres the map...sorry its so big.

At least if the head of state has a non political role, then at least s/he can act as a check on the powers of the Prime Minister etc.. It would help stop totalitarianism or the kind of thing that happened to cyprus beforehand. THe problem then(1960s) was that the President was the head of government and he could not have anyone who could oppose his political decisions, because he was the highest power...do you see what i mean?

Yes, but this is the map of 1960, meaning the population of ethnic groups has increased in 4 decades!

This map is from 1960, the ethnic distribution is nothing like that now. You're better to work from the current ethnic split and revise the boundaries accordingly. In the past I uploaded a map to show where I'd place the boundaries, I'll see if I can find it.

i know, i know, but at least it shows you how complicated the problem of property is. Its not the simple case of TCs being in the North and GCs in the South, historcally, villages are spread everywhere.

The population was then about 1/2 million people, now its around 800,000

I don't think moving the population around would be a good idea after looking at the map now. Because no one will be happy of the distribution. Since the population of the two ethnic groups have increased you will have to compremise from GC villages, so that everybody can fit in. And obviously that will make th GCs pretty unhappy.

what they(govt/un/eu etc..) could to do, is do a survey of every GC/TC and ask them whether they would go back to their villages, then to draw a map of what it would then look like then

Or as the solution is resolved, set up an independant commission to constantly review the borders of the 'zones' so it fits in with population movements. Maybe every year or so.

Or forget the idea of multi/bi zonal solution, and instead look at a single geographical entity, and do the Chamber of Deputies as ive said before, but just from two voting lists, one for GC one for TC.

I think it would be much better if all the ethnic groups lived together but had a united government, as you said in your solution.

magikthrill
magikthrill has decided that it is impossible for a solution to ever be achieved when one side does not respect the other.

i go back to the 20%-80% partition.

brother
MT when did you become a pessimist and take the 'VP' stance.

magikthrill has realized what many have not there is not respect or trust between the communities to desire a workable solution we could be arguing back and forth for the next 100 years and still not get anywhere, I arrives at this decsipn after the referendum as time passes many more Cypriots will arrive at the same conclusion that we can only really agree a solution on the recognized partition basis, the only issues that remain to be clarified is the land distribution percentages and compensation. Do you all feel with the current politcal climate and developments that it can be any other way??? please be realist and honest when you answer, at least the second best option will bring be clear cut and final and bring this matter to a end, whereas if we persue what we all refer to as everyones first option of unification the ??? marks will remain and the possiblity of failure and furdther hardship for our peoples remains as a constant threat.
