why must Cyprus be Greek, why not multilingual?
Why would we need to do that?
here we are taptaptapping in English; and you are asking me what need?
...and how much more superior, our Greek, if we, as Cypriots endeavour to make of our Language a gateway, to the 90% whose mother tongue is not English, because as Greeks we speak many Languages.
you too are my friend kurupetos, if you love Cyprus first we are an Army, if you resist the changes of the Modern World (already gone) it is not "Greek" by any definition, but most importantly, it is Ignorance. way ahead on the conspiracies is not enough from us who take this challenge to write, there is the sense as well of where we should be. indeed, i am a supporter of a BBF, because there is a chance to define a way of life where you don't have to be "Greek" to be defined as a Cypriot who loves Cyprus, and that Greekness is sustained through everyday living by the self-representation they choose, as Persons, to represent themselves. it is a tasty choice in defending what is an ethnosphere, it does not detract from what is a vast majority, but in this Liberty, by equality, other Constituents can sustain themselves, too.
...imagine, come to Cyprus, 200 years from now. but for the little time when it was an Ottoman backwater, Cyprus remains, a crossroad for three Continents, and all their Cultures. kurupetos, i have told the Forum members stories, from my experience with the Merchant Marine and from Hospitals, my friends all Greek speaking Africans mostly in Canada, who survived, who saved themselves through Immigration (and work) from wherever they were because they had this ability, to speak Greek. who are these "Greeks" you are so proud about, in my mind misguided no better than "Turks"; save Greek for who? i don't believe that Greek is the sole domain of "Greeks", i am more proud of the Greeks who welcomed these Greeks, and i am not a "Greek" because i am a Human Being. i am a Cypriot because of my roots, grateful am i to have been introduced to my life, in a village so old, but i am homeless in Canada without it, and i don't want to be; none of that is important, is it? i know how much better Cyprus can be, unified as one, because it is an island never divided, and because its Heritance is a value to all Mankind. think again, because Cyprus will have to be bigger than, just Greek, to thrive, not just to survive, not so far in the future.
...think about it, (3) or more Official Languages, a Policy where there is complete transparency between them in Contract. and why not encourage this fluency toward other Languages, as Cypriots, and/or, as Cypriot Constituents. Greeks who speak many Languages maybe, but a Language learned and the desire to do so, much greater.
