NICOSIA - The two appointed negotiators on the UN-brokered Cyprus peace talks on Tuesday met for the last time before they enter the phase of substantive negotiations on May 6. A UN statement released after the meeting in Nicosia also said: “The Greek Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis and the Turkish Cypriot negotiator Kudret Özersay met today in the United Nations Protected Area of Nicosia at the Good Offices Mission and concluded the screening phase”. It added: “They agreed to meet on May 6, 2014 when they will enter the phase of substantive negotiations”. Stalled peace talks resumed on February 11 after the island’s community leaders agreed on a joint communiqué highlighting key principles of a federated Cyprus. But the process appears to be quite bumpy as the international community – especially the US – seems keen to maintain the momentum.

The church lies within the walled city of Famagusta, which is at very close proximity to the fenced off area of Famagusta, known as Varosha. Diplomatic initiatives are currently underway to have Varosha returned to Greek Cypriots as a confidence building measure. Several ambassadors attended the event as did the Turkish Cypriot Mufti , Dr Talip Atalay. Cyprus held Turkey responsible for the disappearance of 1,500 Greek Cypriots and the displacement of 200,000 others, as well as the violation the basic rights of Greek Cypriots who remained in the north.

The court's decision on Monday, given in the French city of Strasbourg, said that Turkey's responsibility had not been erased over the passage of time. It was ordered to pay 30 million euros ($41.27 million) to relatives of those missing, and a further 60 million euros ($82.5 million) for "the enclaved Greek-Cypriot residents of the Karpas peninsula." It will be up to the Cyprus government to determine how to award the damages.

The court also found Turkey guilty of violating several articles of the European Convention on Human Rights. This includes the right to property and prohibiting inhuman or degrading treatment.
