The talks are expected to start immediately in Cyprus, followed by a conference in Geneva, Switzerland on January 9, to be attended solely by the Cypriot camps. Representatives of guarantor powers Greece, Turkey and the UK would thereafter join the conference from January 12. The two sides will present their respective maps on January 11.

The full statement by the United Nations Spokesperson, released after the dinner, follows:

“1 December 2016 – Tonight, the Greek Cypriot leader, Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Mustafa Akıncı, met at the Head of Mission’s Residence in the UN Protected Area (UNPA) under the auspices of the Special Adviser of the Secretary General (SASG) on Cyprus, Mr. Espen Barth Eide.

The two leaders assessed the state of play of the negotiations and exchanged views on the way forward. The leaders have decided to immediately re-engage in their negotiations and have instructed their negotiators to continue meeting in order to achieve further progress on all outstanding issues interdependently.

The leaders will also meet as required. In line with their joint resolve to reach a comprehensive settlement as soon as possible, they further decided that they will meet in Geneva on the 9th of January 2017. On the 11th of January, they will present their respective maps. From the 12th of January, a Conference on Cyprus will be convened with the added participation of the guarantor powers. Other relevant parties shall be invited as needed”.

May Day;

CYPRUS
Greek and Turkish Cypriots marked May Day with a "Rock for Peace" concert in support of talks aimed at reunifying their ethnically divided island.
Monday's celebrations kicked off with a gathering of hundreds of Greek Cypriot left-wing trade unionists in front of Cyprus' Finance Ministry to affirm their support for a peace deal that would bring about a united country.
The ambassadors of Palestine and Cuba, as well as the charge d'affaires of the Venezuelan Embassy, were also in attendance.
To the beat of marching bands, union members then marched to the capital's Ledra Palace checkpoint, where they joined Turkish Cypriot counterparts. The checkpoint connects the breakaway Turkish Cypriot north and the island's internationally recognized south.
In unison, they entered a soccer field inside the United Nations-controlled buffer zone where Greek and Turkish Cypriot rock acts took to the stage.

...at the Ledra crossing now there are people who gather to demonstrate that they are Cypriots every day.

The movement grows, a second human chain of Cypriots will be formed this Saturday.

...it grows.

http://in-cyprus.com/unite-cyprus-now-proves-the-islands-potential/

It reached around 350 the following weekend. And since the somewhat equivocal pledge last Sunday to get back to Geneva, even the smaller weekday crowds have been growing.

Why does this prove the island’s potential? First, it shows that there are a number of resourceful people who really want to make a Cyprus settlement work. They already have friends across the divide and will be an important ‘accelerator’ in bringing people, institutions and businesses together.

Second, they have already been working on it. At the Ledra Street crossing and elsewhere, I have met business people who know exactly what they will do the day after a solution and have already set up agreements with business counterparts from the other community to do so. I shall not expose them by saying who they are, but suffice it to say that some of them are big business.

They are also innovative. Not only does Unite Cyprus Now have a recognisable brand (designed by Maria Voniati), and an anthem (composed by Haji Mike and Gibsy Rhodes), the participant who has become the crowd’s natural leader, Andreas Lordos, actively encourages different forms of expression. This has spurred all kinds of initiatives, from salsa dancing to poetry.

The spontaneous flourishing in the buffer zone is a living example of the island’s potential. Unite Cyprus Now participants are imaginative, inventive, and they never give up
