this article widely published worldwide:

A lot depends on the stance of newly-elected Turkish President Erdoğan as to whether the stalemate in Cyprus will continue or not, the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades has stated on Sunday.

The President noted moreover that the next few months will be the most crucial ones in the current phase of peace talks, aiming to reach a negotiated settlement. He added that an indication of Erdoğan`s good will for a solution in Cyprus will become apparent in September, during the UN General Assembly in New York.

In statements at the village of Pedoulas, in the Nicosia District, President Anastasiades said that “according to information, Erdoğan appears decisive” for contributing to a Cyprus solution. This, he noted, will become apparent in due course.

Moreover, the President expressed hope that Cyprus` strategic allies and its European partners will become more active in pushing for results or some initiatives over Cyprus.

Speaking about the UN General Assembly, in September, President Anastasiades said that consultations and actions, in the margins of the Assembly, will prove whether the new Turkish President is willing to contribute substantially in ending the island`s occupation by Turkish troops and in finding a lasting solution, that is suitable for a European country.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third

Only Turks, carpetbaggers, turkophiles and traitors call it north. For the rest of us, real Cypriots, it's called occupied areas.

...you are mistaken, north, as in Cyprus, its north, is acceptable; not "North", but of course you know that being a carpetbagger yourself, and of course you'll take any opportunity to cause confusion.

He has. He does. Often.

In an interview with the New York newspaper, Ethnikos Kirikas, he (Anastasiades) said: “There is no plan B. Turkey has tried for 40 years now to upgrade the construct of the occupied areas, but it has failed.”

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades called Sunday on Greek Cypriots` “to realize that through the sale of Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied areas they weaken our negotiating position to return and especially territorial adjustments”.

A human chain stretching from south to north Nicosia through the Ledra Street checkpoint will take place on Monday.

The bi-communal event, called ‘Peace Meeting and Reunion’, is part of the international day of action for world peace organised by the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU). The day honours the memory of World War II victims.

In Cyprus the event is being organised by leftist Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO), the Turkish Cypriot Federation of Revolutionary Workers union (DEV-IS) , Turkish Cypriot Teachers’ and Workers unions (KTOS, KTOEOS, KTAMS, BES) and the bi-communal group United Cyprus.

The UN said that from September 2-4 Eide would be in New York for consultations with the UN Secretary-General and other senior UN officials including.

“Lisa Buttenheim. As a consequence, the United Nations has requested a short postponement of the leaders meeting currently scheduled for September 2. During his visit to the island, the SASG will consult with the leaders on an appropriate date for their September meeting,” the statement said.

GREEK FOREIGN Minister Evangelos Venizelos on Thursday played postman on his trip to Ankara, taking with him a letter from President Nicos Anastasiades addressed to new Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Venizelos confirmed that Anastasiades had asked him to pass on a letter to the new Turkish head of state during his visit to Ankara to attend Erdogan’s swearing-in ceremony.

“President Anastasiades asked me to pass on a congratulatory letter to President Erdogan exactly because the Cyprus Republic government, President Anastasiades, understands very well the reality, that the determining factor for a Cyprus problem solution is Turkey” he said.

Regarding Greco-Turkish bilateral relations and developments in the wider region, Venizelos said the key to everything is a just and viable Cyprus solution based on UN decisions and the EU acquis.

“The Turkish leadership evidently understands this very well,” he said, adding he expects Erdogan to do his best to find a solution

According to government sources, Anastasiades’ letter is made up of two short paragraphs. The first congratulates Erdogan for winning the first direct presidential elections in Turkey while the second expresses hope that he will make a personal contribution to achieve a Cyprus problem solution which will be to the benefit of all interested parties.

The letter comes just days before Erdogan makes his first visit abroad as president to the occupied north of Cyprus. Those involved in the peace talks will be listening closely on Monday to hear what Erdogan has to say about the island’s division, which did not even register as an issue of discussion in the preceding election campaign in Turkey.

A day after Erdogan’s visit, on Tuesday, Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu will meet for the first time after the summer break in an effort to agree on the way forward in the talks.
