[06] Afrika: Racism is escalating after Ertugrulogu taking "office"

Under the title "This is racism", Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika newspaper (26.05.16) reports that the so-called police prevented a group of Greek Cypriots to attend an event for the memory of Fazil Onder who was assassinated in 1958 together with other Turkish Cypriots by TMT.
According to Afrika the "police" threatened to arrest the Greek Cypriots who gathered at the place that the event was organized and forced them to leave.

Senel Elcil, member of the organization committee of the event asked for Akinci to step in on the issue but the paper writes that even the efforts of the Turkish Cypriot leader to the so-called security forces were without result.

According to Afrika, racism was escalated after Tahsin Ertugruloglu took over the post of the "foreign minister" in the new "coalition government" between the National Unity Party and the Democratic Party and notes that similar restrictions against the participation of Greek Cypriots in events in the occupied area were usual in the past but were lifted in recent years. "But these practices came back", the paper notes.

Let us not praise the dead, but rather honour their memory and reflect on the manner of their dying, and recognise for what it was the evil that caused many of those deaths, in particular of the unarmed civilans, men women and Children, the old, the weak, the sick, whether they are Greek Speaking Cypriots or Turkish Speaking Cypriots, also the disappeared prisoners of war, all murdered by armed thugs, sometimes dressed in Uniform.

May those who did (or supported) the killing have no peace in their minds either asleep or awake, whether they are Greek or Turkish speaking, until they recognise the enormity of their deeds.

The Committee of Missing Persons (CMP) is looking for two Greek Cypriot soldiers, who served in 1974, that may be able to help piece together a mystery over human remains found in Nicosia.

The two soldiers, according to a witness account who was also a soldier back in the summer of 1974, are believed to have first-hand knowledge of a burial site near to what used to be the “By Pass” army post in Ayios Dometios – situated close to the Nicosia horse racing track.

Greek Cypriot CMP representative, Nestoras Nestoros, told state radio on Friday that seven or eight people are believed to have been buried there.

The same information came from an earlier testimony about a decade ago, but another witness living abroad stepped forward recently and corroborated the story.

Nestoros said the two Greek Cypriot soldiers could provide more details regarding an incident when a military commander had given orders to collect dead bodies and bury them.

“To date, no information or clues have been found regarding the names or origins of the two soldiers – who are considered to be key witnesses in the investigation in that area,” said the Greek Cypriot CMP representative.

Some media reports say British troops had assisted in the effort, in the presence of Canadian troops, while Turkish troops were observing from a distance.

Nestoros has issued a plea to anyone with information on missing persons to come forward and contact authorities by calling 22 400 142 or sending email to [email protected].
