indeed, progress...

“Leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties are convinced that the time has come for official actions on behalf of the two communities in honour of the missing people of both communities” the declaration goes on.

“In this direction, they call upon the two leaders to consider (a) the construction of common monument and (b) to declare a joint Commemoration Day, both dedicated to the memory of victims of the Cyprus conflict, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots” it is noted.

...so many years divided may end with simple acts like these.

The visit was organised with the assistance of the non-governmental bi-communal Association of Relatives of Missing Persons and Victims of War “TOGETHER WE CAN”.

...for the missing, the dead, and the families which survive them, this is a big step.

If we do not recognise these, our fallen, as Cypriots: we fail them, they die in vain; we fail ourselves, as Cypriots never Free.

...you forget Maximus, on the subject of the missing: who was murdered and made to disappear were Cypriot; for "being" Cypriot, victims.
...that's the point; there is no "Greek" or "Turkish" in being Cypriot while we may be Greek and Turkish: there is this difference.

Paphitis wrote:“Greeks” or “Turks”, Greeks or Turks, “Cypriots” or Cypriots?

Should we just all make “butter” or butter?

...better than making ''guns'', don't you think?

Excavations are currently underway for Greek Cypriots who went missing in 1974, in the villages of Gerani, Sysklipos, Hamit Mantres and Assia (military zone) and for Turkish Cypriots who went missing in 1964 in Strovolos.

“The leaders made an appeal in 2014, the religious leaders in 2015. Now we are trying to convince these old Cypriots who are reluctant to talk that if they die with the information then it is over,” he said.

Arni said that 45 years after the 1974 invasion and 55 years after the events of 1963-1964, the pain of the families of the missing has in fact increased. “The more I work on this issue, the more I realise that it is the deepest war wound of all, the only one that increases with time.”

The CMP has recently benefited from the services of a senior psychology specialist from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) who is contacting Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot families of missing persons who have not yet received remains of their loved ones, and is preparing a report to show the resilience and the depth of their suffering.

“We excavated 1,245 sites up to January 31, 2019 so over the last 13 years we excavated about 100 per year. Last year we excavated only 50 sites, we need to be careful so that this doesn’t translate into less excavations but better ones, which deliver results,” he added. The aim for this year is 75 sites/excavations mostly in the north. Eight teams work in the occupied areas and one in Strovolos.

The Committee believes that they can access important information in cooperation with the Cypriot community in the UK, to help in identifying missing persons and possible burial locations, thus offering some answers and closure to the relatives of the missing, who have been waiting for so many years in uncertainty.

“The members believe that the time has come for our expatriate Cypriots to illuminate the path of our efforts with the knowledge they may possess, thus sending a positive message to the new generation, that cooperation and mutual understanding are elements necessary for the future of our country and its people,” the statement adds.
