Greek Foreign Minister Petros Molyviates also expressed the belief that there will be developments soon. As he said, “the closer we get to October 3rd, efforts to find a solution will be stepped up. Because I believe that it will be to the benefit of all the interested parties to reach a final solution. That is, to the benefit of Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, Europe and the US, which plays its role.” Mr. Molyviatis added that the Annan plan will be the basis for a solution to the Cyprus issue and that the solution should comply with the EU Acquis.

While our own side is waiting for developments on the Cyprus issue, Ankara is ready to create the circumstances towards its EU accession. Abdullah Gul’s statements yesterday were extremely revealing as to Turkey’s intentions. As he said, “Turkey will make a great effort for the permanent solution to the Cyprus issue and has already been preparing the ground to this end.” He pointed out that “the Annan plan is still valid for Turkey, since it seeks a solution to the issue before the beginning of accession talks on October 3rd 2005.” Mr. Gul explained that “if the thorny issue,” as he characterized the Cyprus issue, “is settled before October, there will be no problem as regards the recognition of the Republic of Cyprus.”

The Turkish Foreign Minister excluded the possibility of a re-negotiation of the Annan plan, pointing out that the solution to the Cyprus issue “should be reached only within the framework accepted by the Turkish-Cypriots and by Turkey.”

Either reunification under a federation or two separate states

Since you are including all options, then we should also include the option of solving the Cyprus problem by creating a functional unitary state. Or also the option for Turkey to forget about EU, if you see it from another point of view.

The GC's will never accept a two state solution!

A two state solution would permanently exclude Turkey from the EU. That would be the price the Turks would have to pay.
