Also history will be taught in a enquiry based way, and nationalism Greek and Turkish will be evicted from all Schools. Children will be taught the Cyprus national anthem and will learn to sing it in both languages.

Might I just add that we could use the former Czechoslovak example, where half the national anthem was sung in Czech and the other in Slovak. So you had to sing it in both languages! :D

Alasya wrote:boulio is right the National Assembly is equivalent to the House of Commons, while the Senate would be similar to your House of Lords. It works in a similar way but of course its members are allowed to discuss issues only at a federal level or national level. The National Assembly and senate would both be at a federal level. Each deputy speaks his own language during discussion and the translators do their work in the backround.

And the national council? Will federal laws have to be passed by all three bodies to become law?

Presumably!?!?!?! Federal laws apply to the entire federation, that is, everyone, every single citizen, so all bodies should agree on them...

Federalism is not the answer! Your Belgian federation is not perfect, look how Flemish nationalists have gained 35% lead in the polls. Look what happened the Czech, and Yugoslav federations. It is a recipe for disaster. Surely its better to compensate everybody for loss of property and have two separate states.

Cyprus Federalism is Designed to Minorise T/Cs

The future Cyprus Federal Rep will consist of two entirely different peoples with their own languages, cultures and traditions: Turkish-speakers in the North, and Greek-speakers in the South.
The third region or state, capital Nicosia, is where 40% of T/C will live in the Federal Rep, this will mean that they could very easily be outnumbered by G/C in their own distinct unilingual region.

Federalisation is deemed necessary because within a democratic system the demographic majority of the Greeks would lead to total domination by G/Cs, and as you mentioned G/C political parties will benefit the most, particularly AKEL, as they can rely on T/C votes. Now if you ask me to choose between AKEL and Denktas, then I choose Denktas because atleast he is a T/C, and as far I m concerned the best person to govern T/C is a T/C, not Christofias!

Federalism is the means by which the T/Cs would be prevented from taking decisions that would effect G/C, however it will allow G/C to make decisions on behalf of T/C, using their population percentage as their right to do this. The Cyprus Federation would effectively be a G/C state with a T/C minority.

As for bilingulism, I admire your love of languages but I would imagine many Greek and Turkish Cypriots would NOT want to learn each others language. I would not want to learn Greek if I was in Cyprus nor would I want my kids to.

My father, mother, uncles and aunts all can speak good Greek but they refuse to. When I was in Cyprus last August, a G/C couple came to us in Girne to ask us for directions in Greek, but my family responded to them in English, on a separate occasion my aunt actually ignored G/Cs all together who spoke to her in Greek.

Dont impose your passion for languages on everybody!

What surprises me is that every proposal for a complete solution in this forum, either coming from a TC or a GC, is better than the Anan Plan. Whats most surprising it comes from a single person without even be discussed with the other side. Obviously after it is discussed it becomes even better.

So I wonder, how the hell, did we end up to that monstrosity called Anan Plan?

That level of 'monsterousness' takes professionals to come up with - mere amatures can not compete :)

Fair play. the Annan plan was created by over 1000 legal experts from countries from around the World, at enormous cost to the UN. High level talks in rich locations like Burgenstock cost money, not to mention the cost of security arrangements.

I believe that the UN genuinely tried their best to find a political solution that both sides would accept, the fact that Papadopoulos was playing all or nothing and using the nationalist card (his tearful, and emotive speech to the nation where he said "defend your history, your honor") is largely why the G/C side said no.

I dont like conspiracy theories, particularly ones that cannot be supported with evidence. I dont believe that the UN set out to deliberately inflict a pro-Turkish solution on the G/C, why would they spend so much money and effort to create a 9000 page pro-Turkish plan, that they know will be rejected in a referenda?

Conspiracy theory is all they have, true facts would just be to easy.

yes but these were legal experts and people who did not necessarily have anything to gain from depriving the G/C of their inheritance. this idea that all the nations of the World set out to conspire against you, is a load of rubbish that Papadopoulos is telling you to cover up his own murky agenda. The truth Papadoc like Denktash is a pathological liar, whose own past is dark and sinister.
