CYTA ADSL slowness

Postby PvUtrix » Wed Jan 04, 2006 8:33 am

I remember the good days when CYTA just started offering ADSL, it used to fly then...

But since then I'm guessing they got many more customers that they can provide quality service for. Me and all the people I know who use ADSL are constantly complaining at their horrible service.

If you need to access a server via SSH it's hell, especially during busy hours (from 8:00am to 12:00pm). It's faster to use dial-up!

I'm located 300m away from the CYTA's hub so it can't be the area...

I'm definetely not getting anywhere near my advertised 1megabit...

Can we sue CYTA for false advertising or something?

I've noticed exactly the same thing, I've had ADSL since the begining (I was the first person in the Paralimni area to convert from a 64mb ISDN line to ADSL and the place was full of engineers working out how to wire things up :)) and lately it's been terrible, apart from up/downloading I sometimes play games online and for 2 of the last 3 days haven't been able to.

One trick I've found that sometimes helps is to switch or turn off the proxy server, sometimes Larnaca is better than Famagusta.

Can we sue? I don't think so, CYTA is pretty clever in it's contract wording and makes few commitments.

Cyta is incredibly slow......have you tried changing providers?

I've been through Spider and Cyta and found them both rather unstable and slow as hell..... playing games is impossible cos you keep getting dropped.

What about all the new companies?

I'm still on DUN, so cannot comment. But the other providers cannot do any better as a) the copper is Cyta, b) the interface from copper to optic fibre is Cyta c) the routing is Cyta d) the connections from this island to the outside world are Cyta and e) the overall bandwidth for ALL the ISPs together is limited by Cyta. You have no choice except going satellite at a cost and little guarantee of a faster connection with limited bandwidth.

I do not know what problems you are facing but I also have an ADL connection of 1MB (1024 Kbits) and Cytanet as my ISP. One the average, whenever I check my connection speed from the i-choice website I get around 900-950 kbits /sec and at the same time when I check it through the Cytanet website I get around 850-900 kbits /sec. These are the average values I get over various check ups within the whole day /night spectrum.

I don't use proxy servers and I've given up on online gaming, the lag is too great...

Thx God! I have a small network at home :)

when I look at the prices in UK, I feel like I'm being overcharged, big time...

Their 1Mb service costs £9.99 per month if you live in their limited catchment area (£25 setup). £29.99 USB modem.
Their 22Mb broadband using costs £29.99 per month

24Mb broadband for £24 per month, £24 connection charge.

As for speed tests (Not from CYTA obviously)
7.7 kilobits per second
Communications 97.7 kilobits per second
Storage 11.9 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 1.4 minutes
Subjective rating Slow

http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ (EUROPE)

Your download speed : 94 kbps or 11.8 KB/sec.
Your upload speed : 55 kbps or 6.9 KB/sec.

http://www.dslreports.com/stest (USA - Megapath)

Your download speed: 137 kbit/s
The value 137 kbit/s is equivalent to 17 kByte/s. The following table shows you,
how long it will take to download several files or pages.

Not very impressive is it?

Change to Netway or Otenet. WAY better than Netrunner of Cytanet. (Or wait a bit for PrimeTel)
I run the first and last speed tests with my otenet connection. The 2nd one required java so I didn't run. For the first one I got almost double the speed when selecting USA/New York than when selecting Europe. USA result was over 600 Kilobits.

http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ (EUROPE)

343.2 kilobits per second

Communications 343.2 kilobits per second
Storage 41.9 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 24.4 seconds
Subjective rating Not bad

http://www.bandwidth-check.com/

Your download speed: 732 kbit/s
The value 732 kbit/s is equivalent to 92 kByte/s.
