Well, Papadopoulos was voted by 52% of the people (from the first round). If he is just "self-important" then everybody else is also.

I thought this thread was about names of "famous" people. If we are going to give our comments about them then this thread is going to change significantly.

Controversial Alparslan Turkes is another famous Cypriot from Lefke. Famous in Turkey anyway! His party was a coalition partner to 2 Turkish governments.

who is he?

Alparslan Turkes
Period : 1917 - 1997
Biographical detail : The politician born in Nicosia, Cyprus, whose parents migrated to Istanbul where he won a place at Kuleli, the military academy whose previous graduates had included Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

Alparslan put into practice a brand of ultra-nationalism founded in the “Turanist” myth: Turks were a continuation of a brave race that came to Anatolia from the steppes of Central Asia. He believed the answer to Turkey’s problems lay in strong and radical dictatorship and certainly not in liberal democracy.

Alparslan was arrested after 1980 coup when he and 200 members of his party were charged with instigating civil war and murdering nearly 600 people. He was released on medical grounds in 1985 and a guilty verdict was overturned on appeal.

Alparslan Turkes endorsed, just before his death, the military’s all-too-public view that the pro-Islamic Welfare party was threatening the country’s democratic regime.

He is a kind of twin of the "Digenis" Georges Grivas. If both had been in Cyprus from 50s till 74, God knows, today; there would be no Cypriots in Cyprus ... Thanx God for kept at least one of them away from Cyprus... Though he caused thousands of leftist Turks and innocent peoples death in Turkey...
