Unknown assailants break windows of Protestant church in Turkey

ANKARA, Turkey: Unknown assailants on Sunday stoned a two-story building housing a Protestant church in the Black Sea port city of Samsun, the pastor of the church said.

"The assailants broke at least 10 windows in an overnight attack," Mehmet Orhan Picaklar, the pastor of the Agape Church, told The Associated Press by telephone. "This is the seventh or eight such attack over the past three years. Separately, I am constantly receiving death threats by e-mail."

Picaklar said the church had moved into the building just two weeks ago. Uniformed police officers were deployed outside the church after the attack, the private Dogan news agency reported.

The attack was the latest against Christians in this predominantly Muslim country.

Ethnic Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, who spoke out about the mass killings of Armenians in the early 20th century, was gunned down outside his newspaper on Jan. 19.

Last February, a Turkish teenager shot dead a Catholic priest, the Rev. Andrea Santoro, as he knelt in prayer in his church in the Black Sea port of Trabzon. The attack was believed linked to widespread anger in the Islamic world over the publication in European newspapers of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. Two other Catholic priests were also attacked last year.

Of Turkey's 70 million people, some 65,000 are Armenian Orthodox Christians, 20,000 are Roman Catholic, and 3,500 are Protestant, mostly converts from Islam. Around 2,000 are Greek Orthodox and 23,000 are Jewish.

oh come on, you guys love to spice up everything that has Turks involved, whats next, an uprising and call for jihad followed by religious cleansing? whit over 70 million people crimes are inevitable, dont act like nothing ever happens in Greece nor in the RoC....bunch of cry babies i tell you....

That sooo advanced Europe that Sotos is sarcastically bragging on about, watched 250,000 people get slaughtered right in the heart of it, just over 10 years ago... and I myself have witnessed just how friendly and civilised the Greek police can be, altho they are ever soooo European

Does every one know who comes out at the top of the list on a world study into racism?

I was talking to a plumber yesterday and he told me of a holiday he had in Rhodes. Apparently the local businesses were telling him that they were “tooling” up to get rid of the immigrants that were coming over to take over their jobs. My friend asked them how they got away with it and they told him that they just paid the fines. FINES! What happened to jails? He was also told, in no uncertain terms, that the British were too stupid for letting these people into their country.

come on zan those was words of few idiots...I am "tooling" up to be a president. that doesnt make any different what the law and the government does. I am not saying that they are not racist...they are...and they want to kick out every minority...but they express only what they had in their minds. Words in the street in an island between people are not the most representative words

Exactly my point Lena. A few broken windows does not a racist country make.(Did you know I write poetry  ). As for threats...well we know a poster here that is good at those, even death threats. Lets not get carried away with stereotypes.

And you said about words...here is not just words...its threats and damages and you never know if those threats will be facts soon. Lets hope it wont. Do you think that its the first time that those things happened? The hole story its like a cd...you hear it once and then you put it away for a little bit and then you want it again! You believe that those are just rumours? Those things never happened?

No Lena, they happened and they will happen again. The point is that they are happening all over the world and Greece has been reported as being the most racist country in the world and France second. I have to drive past a mosque every friday in the UK and since this rubbish that is going on in Iraq, the police have to oversee the prayers not from the Arab attacks but from racists that are attacking them. That does not make every Brit a racist. There have been racist attacks in the south and many more in Greece. There were racist attacks in Cyprus from the RoC government and there were killings but we are constantly asked to forget those and become Cypriots again. Who has more right to refuse????????
