US want guarantor status?

According to a report by television station NTV, US officials have said sending troops to the island could relieve Turkish Cypriot concerns after the two states on Cyprus were reunited.
“The US can remove this anxiety of security by deploying its troops in the island and provide extra guarantees,” NTV quoted US officials as saying.
As reported in the NTV coverage, the US sees Cyprus having a strategic importance due to its proximity to the energy basins in the Middle East, Caucasus and Africa and the could also serve to safeguard the outlets for the Baku-Ceyhan energy corridor.
Washington is already discussing boosting its presence in Turkey, making further use of the ncirlik airbase near Adana.
The US would also seek to be given guarantor status on Cyprus, according to the NTV report, thus creating a political base and also raising the possibility that Washington could be given a place at the negotiation table for the forthcoming Cyprus talks.

    I can't and don't believe it!

Why you don't believe it?
As the article said they want to protect their strategic interests. It seems very natural to want that, who wouldn't?

I hope we will not allow this though. We have already A LOT of foreign troops. What we want is demilitarization, not additional armies.

Democracy and EU is more than enough to guarantee stability in Cyprus.

Shock and denial I suppose. I can't stand the thought. America already has mucky paws over Cyprus and the whole idea of Cyprus being some giant aircraft carrier prevails and it stinks.

So true...guarantor status is just a way for the big boys having their dirty little way with Cyprus.

But nothing in the international press has stated this intention of the americans....strange :?

Some people suggested that we should join NATO.
Personally I do not like it, but since we have the British bases and we have very little control anyways, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea after all.
