Lessons in Turkish 'democracy'!

Postby -mikkie2- » Mon Feb 07, 2005 1:03 pm

This article appears in Hurriyeim. Can you believe these people? They actually asked Rice to sensor the American media?! This does go to show that the Turkish mentality is not compatible with western values. I am not having a dig at the Turkish Cypriots because I think they are above all that, but you have to admit that it is a bit scary considering these are the people that are talking on your behalf.

Rice: We Can Not Control Hollywood

As Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul asked from her to prevent anti-Turkish serials and films, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that; We are not strong enough to control Hollywood! Hurriyet had access to the minutes of the meeting between Rice and Gul which lasted 1.5 hours. In their meeting, Gul said that "To win the heart of the Turkish people, you should take serious steps about the serial and films which display a bad image of Turks and PKK, Cyprus and Kirkuk."

Rice answered, telling him that; There can be misunderstanding between friends sometimes. This does not mean that that friendship has been damaged. PKK is a terror organization for us, like Al-Qaeda. We understand your complaints about the films.
The Bush Administration is victimized by these. The majority of these are products of Holly wood. We can not influence it. If we had, we could have prevented the Fahrenneit 9/11 film of Michael Moore.

WE MADE UP WITH EU, TURKEY IS TOUGH

Washington Post daily commented on the Turkey visit of Rice, saying that; The differences over Iraq have been eliminated with Europe but our business with Turkey is tough. The Turkish public opinion is against the U.S. existence in Iraq and is angry that PKK has not been quelled yet.

RICE PLEADS ABOUT IMAGE AND IRAN

During their meeting, Rice asked from Gul to prevent the anti-American sentiments in Turkey and for Iran.

She said to Gul that; Our studies show that anti-American feelings in Turkey are raising. We know that you and Prime Minister are very attractive in Turkey and are influential. You can play a big role in enlightening the public opinion. If you underline the points we agreed , during your statements. We are not intending to make a strategic questioning. Because we are already strategic allies.

Something like the above request of Rice, should have been what Gul asked for not censorship on anti-Turkish serials and films. The distinction between an advanced American intelligent and a Turkish one. However I don't think it will affect Turkey's EU entry.

Even the so-called RoC, as an illegitimate fait-accompli; banned several "anti-Hellenic" books and movies has become a member of EU with their never changed hysteric mentality.

It's all about the very important interests of half-racists, half-contemporary EU.

What's striking is; there are some naive people who takes it seriously and interpret the facts how it suit themselves.

Hey Mikkie,

Do you really believe that media in USA is not censored and is not biased. I am talking about the mainstream media.

Granted what Turkey has asked was meaningless and can not be asked openly and bluntly that way. But it is a known fact that if Ameican goverment want to control what media writes, they have their ways.

But again. Regardless of what happens, I still belive USA is probably the most free country in the world in terms if human liberties, and free press, and freedom of speech. Even after the famous 'patriot act'.

Take care,
