what about the gurantorship and the british bases

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

what about the gurantorship and the british bases

Postby boulio » Thu Feb 17, 2005 3:59 am

i See alot of arguments and comprimes and agreements between the g/c and t/c in the forum on the internal functioning of there component states, however what about the external factors that will effect a united cyprus, the treaty of gurantorship, right of intervention and the british bases, how would the t/c and g/c include them in the mix and what are there common grounds that both communities agree upon?

IMO,

fu*k the british and get their stinking bases off the island. of course i dont think this is possible.

also as far as guarantor powers are concerned, i personally dont think they should exist if/when a solution is reached. such a thing would imply that the solution will cause an unstable government, so such a solution shouldn't be accepted in the first place...

I also would prefer to see a solution without guarantors ... having said that, I strongly doubt that the Turkish Cypriots will agree to a solution which does not involve some sort of protection from Turkey.

So it's going to be a complex issue, we need to strike a careful balance here between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot security needs.

As for the british, I strongly believe that they should not be a part of the Security apparatus. The issue of the bases is different. There might be a case for their withdrawal in the long term, but in the mean time, if they pay their rent, they can stay while we get to tackle our more urgent problem (re-unification).

Well, they were supposed to pay rent since 1960, but we have yet to see any payments ...

i see, then why the "will" to keep them. i mean i know theres no power to remove them but its not like theyre being helpful with a solution to to the cyprus problem anyway.

Is the fact that the rent does not go to TC and GC but only GC npot the basis (excuse?) for not paying the rent due? I thought there was some connection there?

Personally I do not think the bases are a problem and that it is unrealistic to expect to get rid of them.

We can always send them a back dated statement and demand for payment, or threaten to send the recıevers lıke they do when someone owes them money.

Why should they get a free rıde, that money they owe could be used ın many good causes over the ısland.
