Hence why i said to start off with the basics.

Are YOU trying to school me about music? lol Do you really think there are great artists in the 21ist century? We are only 7 years into the 21st century so talking about 'great' is easier said than done. Besides, Erykah came out in the 20th century but if you want to talk about modern soul / neo soul singers, you could also talk about Eric Roberson, Jill Scott, Raphael Saadiq, Musiq, D'Angelo...and others. Or you could talk about some great producers like Jazzy Jeff, DJ Spinna, Raphael Saadiq. Erykah is very good but to call her one of the 'great artists' is a slightly tall order.

Or there is a soulful house scene today which is very organic and very instrumental, which is the continuation today of real soul music.

Like i said, its best to start off with the basics and the history of music. you have to know where you come from before you can know where your going.

Great choice TC. Erykah is very very very good but 'great' is a word not to be used to hastily.

Here's my favourite D'Angelo. Its quite well known and shame he hasnt done more material but this track is cooooool.

Not trying to teach you anything Snake because I have been out of the scene for so long that I do not know any of those names you mentioned. I found Erykah through Jazz FM when they used to play great new music and then they suddenly stopped. They have gone back to old favourites again and the good they did by introducing artists like her is gone too. I am always glad to hear about new artists as good and original like her although the track that T_C posted is a throwback to my funking days it is still great. Her Album "Baduism" is a classic and I am sorry but I will not wait twenty years for others to tell me that she is of the "Greats". She is already up there in my list. There are a few others that are really good on the "Nu Cool" album but they seem not to have made it so big...Not in the circles I knock about in anyway but you might know better.

:) You are good, Zan, and a true Marvin fan! I wondered if anyone would notice.

Lou Rawls. Really!

... And Anita Baker with her velvet voice seems to have drifted off into the sunset:

The Anita Baker 'Songstress' album is a classic peace of work.

Especially the song 'Feel The Need'.
