Blackmail GC for solution

Erdogan´s Advisor wants Greek Cypriots to be blackmailed by the USA
Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRISLI newspaper (25.02.05) reports that, the Chairman of the Turkish-USA Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group and Advisor to the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Foreign Relations issues, Egemen Bagis, has declared that in a second referendum to be held in Cyprus an announcement by the USA that "we will recognize the `TRNC´ if the referendum result is not `yes´" will have major impact on the voting.

Bagis made this statement while addressing a meeting organized by the Turkish-American Work Council.

Bagis went on and alleged that the so-called isolations imposed on the Turkish Cypriots continue unabated.

Now as much as we all want the tc and the north to prosper i do not believe in what is being suggested as a tactic to get the yes vote out of the gc.

Yes I also believed the GCs were blackmailed during the 1st referendum and yet not even the EU Parliament approved the bill for direct trade with the north which was the least thing they could have done to "punish" the GCs...

sorry mate i am not into this punish the gc for using their democratic right of freedom of choice but the only thing i found distasteful was when tassos went on t.v and cried, that to me was emotional blackmail and another form of taking the gc right of choice away.

you cant blackmail a people to say yes to something that is wrong, sit down have REAL negotiotions and try to find a solution,i mean christ Erdogan last year said that Turkey is always a step ahead of the ROC,is this what he calls a step ahead?he has to use the US to threaten a small country like cyprus?

I didn't see his speech but I did read it online and I liked it as a speech. However, I think it is ridiculous for him to be crying (even if he is emotional he is the chief of state, c'mon) and I don't appreciate that he didn't contribue to the Annan plan.

yeah but brother even if papadopoulos didn't go on tv instead of 76% saying no,what would it have been 60%,65% saying no,the plan was voted done because the g/c were not satisfied with annan's filling in the blanks,to favor all of turkeys 12-13 red lines and not taking the g/c concerns to heart.

Brother, I think you should take note of who the speaker was. If this came from an official spokesman at the White House it would be a whole lot more disturbing. Even though this guy is an advisor to Erdogan, there is no chance that the US will unilaterally recognise the TRNC. If it did so, it would essentially be saying that it does not recognise the boundaries of an EU member state. Granted the Americans often like to shoot from the hip, but I'm absolutely certain if they shot an EU member in the foot, the rest would not stand idly by. International politics can get dirty, but such open blackmail is beneath even the Bush administration... and that's a low bar already.

In the first referendum the Americans threatened us that if we say "no" a ton of bricks will fall on our head. There is no balance in the world today. The Americans now don't even need a good excuse to do what they want, and they can now do it openly in front of our eyes(less work for CIA).

You see guys piratis and i are focusing on the realities of the world that the u.s has under Bush become a bully state that does what it likes when it likes, remember Macedonia, they completely went against their own powerful greek lobby and did what they wanted and even though many shouted and complained in the end it has been forgotten and pushed aside, this is the way the world is running under the new babylons(police state)
