Hey Garagoz, I like your new nic. Interesting how Mr Talat was more interested in his picture taken than acknowledging Papadopoulos' hand shake. Oh well, I hope that they do reach an agreement. The turkish press I see has been talking about Mr talat wanting to speed the process and by pass the ngo's and day to day procedures. Wonder if Turkey is ordering a speedy solution. Nice to see he has let go of the idea of recognision of the trnc for a federal solution. I think we may see some movement in the next decade or so in relation to this issue.

Back to square one?

A THREE-HOUR meeting yesterday between the leaders of the two sides resulted in accusation and counter accusation that served only to highlight the yawning gap in their respective positions.
As soon as he returned to the Presidential Palace, President Tassos Papadopoulos accused Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat of attempting to change the parameters of the July 8, 2006 agreement.
“Mr Talat wanted changes to the agreement ... to something which would not have expedited the process, but would on the contrary have led to an early deadlock,” Papadopoulos said.
In a news conference in the north, Talat rejected the accusation and said he had confirmed his earlier suspicions that the Greek Cypriot side was not seeking a solution.
“The Greek Cypriot side is not psychologically ready to start fully fledged negotiations," said Talat.
"I can't say whether there is a sea between us or an ocean."
He said the July 8 process was now “back where it was 14 months ago”.
Yesterday’s meeting, the first between the two leaders in those 14 months, took place at the house of UN Special Representative Michael Moller in the UN-controlled Nicosia airport grounds.
It was designed to kick-start the stalled July 8 process brokered by UN envoy Ibrahim Gambari, which calls for technical committees to tackle everyday concerns, such as crime and the environment, and working groups to handle substantive issues like territorial and power-sharing arrangements.
Despite over a year of on and off meetings – 50 in all – between senior aides to Papadopoulos and Talat, no progress was made in forming the committees.
Yesterday there was not even a definite date for a new meeting between the two aides Tasos Tzonis and Rasit Pertev.
In an ultra-brief statement following the Papadopoulos-Talat meeting, a sombre Moller said: “Mr Papadopoulos and Mr Talat held a discussion in a constructive atmosphere and agreed on the need for the earliest start of the process and discussed other issues leading to a comprehensive settlement.
“They agreed to continue their contacts through the United Nations and to meet again when appropriate.”
Immediately after Moller’s statement, both leaders shook hands and smiled for the cameras. Neither made a statement until they returned to their respective sides of the buffer zone.
Papadopoulos then accused Talat of trying to change the Gambari agreement by restricting the role of the committees to simply a technical level.
“He wanted talks to begin immediately without the committees,” said Papadopoulos who insists the ground must be well prepared to avoid a new breakdown.
Papadopoulos said he had insisted at the meeting on the “speedy and unconditional implementation” of the Gambari deal “because we believe this is a process that can push forward in a positive manner the talks towards a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus questions on a new basis.”
“We believe that through our suggestions we would have shortened considerably the time needed leading to substantive talks and the solution of the Cyprus problem,” he said.
Talat countered that he had raised the issue of timetables due to the urgency to move forward, and accused Papadopoulos of merely stalling.
“We said that because time was working against a solution, there was a need to speed up the 8 July process,” said Talat.
He said he had proposed the immediate formation of five committees which would prepare the ground for fully-fledged negations on a comprehensive settlement.
“This, we said, should be completed within eight to ten weeks. We also proposed a deadline of the end of 2008 by which time negotiations on a comprehensive solution should be complete. This was rejected,” Talat added. “There is nothing in the [Gambari] agreement that time limits cannot be introduced.”
Papadopoulos said the agreement called for solid preparations at committee level coupled with periodic meetings of the two leaders.
“What is the meaning of setting a date for a meeting without having prepared the ground for substantive talks? We do not favour talks which would extend for ever.
The pace of discussion will determine the timeframes,” he said. Progress, not dates and times, was what was important.
Asked if he would be willing to meet Papadopoulos again before the presidential elections, Talat said he would have to “wait and see” whether such meetings were, from Papadopoulos’ point of view, genuine efforts to negotiate or simply a form of electioneering.

So another opportunity missed, still they (or whoever holds office at the time) should be able to get together in another few years and talk about what to talk about and then not agree on how to do this !

Oh really Karma, that is sad, I guess we're all going to go some time, may God, the angels and alll ascended beings help his soul to comfortably fit into heaven life.

yeahh, both Talat and Tpap will be going some time tooo....but why Pavarotti shld go earlier ??
