If the RoC gives you trade, what are we going to use for leverage afterwards? UEFA?

I think the use of Famagusta port by both communities under the supervision of the Eu is a reasonable compromise. Famagusta port will be needed for the reconstruction of Varosha - remember 50000 GC's used to live there before the invasion. The amount of raw materials needed to rebuild will be massive. The port also needs to be modernised and upgraded. It is only fair tha both communities run the port as it also means we WORK TOGETHER. Giving it for sole control to TC's would be a bad step in the sense that we would not have real cooperation. We need this badly in my opinion.

As I understand it a while ago (year or so ago) you could not dial (international) between TRNC (which uses Turkish country code (90) and a TRNC district code (392) ) and the RoC or visa versa. There was a UN ooperated system where you could dial a 'special' number from the north (1234 i think it was) and then dial a number in the RoC (and again I belived this worked visa versa as well) - with much hersay that these lines were monitored by all (UN, TRNC and RoC).

I believe now you can dial direct international in either direction.

When there were blocks on international calls between RoC and TRNC they applied to both landlines and to cell phones from each country. As I recall even cell phones from a UK operator still block these calls (because they in effect used a local operator as a 'partner'. Anyway this is all irrelevanty now as I understand it is possible to dial from one side to other (internationaly) without any restrictions.

at the risk of 'off topicness' and 'too much (attempted) humour' in a 'serious' forum area.

Did Jesus have a cell phone? :)

Saint Jimmy, I don't think that's true ...

TCs want more than just direct trade, they want to be full members of the EU, with all the benefits implied in such membership (social, political, economic, educational etc.)

So even if we agree on Famagusta Port, so that TCs have some direct trade, we will still have more to "offer in return" ...

As to Mikkie's concern that autonomus control of the port will not lead to co-operation - let's just think about this: Does it really matter who is behind the desk stamping the documents, and if there are only TCs behind the desk or GCs as well? The fact is, that port will be heavily used by GCs who will be bringing in materials for the reconstruction of Famagusta, and the reconstruction itself will inevitably be a huge bicommunal project, with thousands of TC workers, TC engineers, and TC town planners participating.
