and for me I still have 'concerns' over his quoted statement about no TC being killed by GC in period 63-74, but this stuff from Packard does go someway towards mitigating that. If he could come out and say that these statements were incorrect (either in the quote, or translation or in his meaning) that would also help (me at least) greatly.

It makes the venomous attacks by Talat against Papadopoulos all the more bemusing. Perhaps Talat is afraid of him. Perhaps he knows that he is genuine and simply wants to paint a bad picture of him. I don't know. It is all very strange.

i think your right mikke, talat would probably prefer anastasiadis that would give turkey and the trnc everything on a silver platter,i think he has realized that papadopoulos besides the fact that he will not do such a thing knows his stuff inside out and will vigouresly negotiate not only for the g/c but for a lot better and even handed solution to the cyprus problem.

A little something I stumbled upon on this Martin Packard character, taken from the introduction to Brendan O'Malley's and Ian Craig's book 'The Cyprus Conspiracy':

"In 1964, US Assistant Secretary of State George Ball told a British officer who was working hard to end the growing ethnic separation by bringing both sides together, 'You've got it wrong son. There's only one solution to this island, and that's partition.' The officer, Lieutenant Commander Martin Packard, confirmed that the maintenance of the military facilities on Cyprus was deemed of paramount importance by the British and American governments and their military advisers at the time, and they thought this would more easily be achieved in a divided Cyprus. Did they finally achieve their aim in 1974? That is what this book seeks to prove."
