Of course I want the cake and eat it too.

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Of course I want the cake and eat it too.

What's the deal with the saying "have your cake and eat it too"? I mean are these two different things? How can that be? Doesn't everyone want to eat their cake? I mean who wants to have cake just to look at? Or would you just want to have cake to impress someone? Like, hey look at me, I've got cake. That's absurd. Surely this saying has meaning from some obscure source I am not privy to. I will instead use "wanting your grapes and having them peeled" because that just makes more sense.

I have had this same discussion with friends in the past. The best 'explaination' I have heard is that the expression means that people want to eat their cake and yet still have a cake after having eaten it. So really it's probably better to say 'you want to eat your cake and still have it too - having eaten it'. ;)

We have a better phrase for that. We say: "You want the whole pie and your dog fed"

i think the best way to relate this saying to the Cyprus issue:

You can have the cake but you got to share it ;)

Of course we then enter the neverending debate of how many pieces each side gets.
