This is part of Svgul Uludag's article in Alithia newspaper:
With arrogance, the Turkish Cypriot member of the Missing Persons Committee blames the Greek Cypriot member of `intransigence`!… How dare they want the bones back! The famous Missing Persons Committee, working since 1981 has not yet `discovered` the bones so well-hidden…
An architect friend visits me to tell me what he knows:
`Why couldn’t INFORCE find anything?` I ask him…
`But don’t you know? The bones are there! But they are digging the wrong place!`
`Why?`
`Because the bones are under a military hospital, this is what I heard…`
`The hospital is also there?`
`Yes! In the same area! But they are digging for nothing!`
`How do you know this?`
`Because people remember when the hospital was being built that it was built over the bones…`
INFORCE has not bothered to contact the civil society. They are just taking their money and `doing their job` like civil servants.
`So where shall we dig?`
`Ah! Here… Only here…`
`Fine, let’s do it!`
They do not issue a statement or ask for information… Even before they pack and go, they don’t. Why should they? They got paid, right? And money is more important than actually finding the bones. They are in the same power game: Their job was to dig and didn’t they dig? Of course they did. If they were digging the wrong place, this wasn’t the fault of INFORCE was it?
Another young man in his 30s wants to meet me with a woman my age to talk about Yialoussa and Komikebir…
`We are developing a project for making our area more beautiful… But we don’t know if the Turkish side will decide to give back the bones or not… We are waiting to see… Because our project will be built over the bones of about 100 Greek Cypriots missing from the Karpaz area we think… From Yialloussa, Komikebir and other villages… They are buried in our project area… So we are waiting what the officials will do…`
People call AFRIKA newspaper and speak, provided that their names are not disclosed… One of them tells the newspaper that in the middle of Nicosia, behind the Halkin Sesi newspaper - which is known as `Tekke Bahchesi` - there is a mass grave of Greek Cypriots. That during the war, truck loads of dead bodies were brought to be buried there and they separated the Greek Cypriots from Turkish Cypriots and were ordered to bury them in a well… Now there is a car park there and underneath lays this mass grave…
Others also speak to talk about Assia, Sinda and other places where they know – because they have witnessed the burial – where Greek Cypriot missing are buried… Again provided their names are not disclosed… Everyone knows something, has witnessed something, has heard something. But there is no political will to resolve the issue and on the contrary they would be punished if they speak up openly, with their names. So people whisper these over the phone or at meetings arranged secretly because they are afraid but what they know, they want to say and are trying to find a way to say it, without putting their lives and the lives of their loved ones in danger…
If the UN or INFORCE were really sincere about the whole thing, they would issue a statement and ask for information from the people. Instead of `digging blindly` why not call on the people to say what they know?
If the UN was really sincere about solving the issue it would issue a statement and say `Tell us what you know! And we would guarantee your safety, your life! Nothing will happen to you if you speak!`
But no! Who can `guarantee` the safety of people if they decide to speak? All the military-beurocratic structures of the regime built over the last 50 years to `control` the Turkish Cypriot community are there. Nothing has been dismantled. Everything works well even though there are sometimes some pressure by the community for more freedom, more democracy, more transparency… When it is about to get out of control, the regime does something (like the opening of the checkpoints in 2003) to ease the heat of the crowds. But the puppet show in the north continues for everyone to watch and in the whole philosophy of this show is `to pretend`… To pretend that you are doing something, to pretend that it is always `the enemy who is intransigent`, to pretend that you have `democracy` and `freedom`… We even have elections to prove that we have `democracy`, right?
As if by irony, as INFORCE packs up to leave, an antique grave is discovered in the Karpaz area… A 3 thousand year old grave with three persons buried in it… And lots of antiquities from the Geometric Times… Vases, jars for the wine, glasses, plates… They were digging for water pipes and there! The grave was safe and sound after 3 thousand years, carved out of stone… The 3 thousand year old bones came to the light, without names, without identity even if they did not ask for it. The regime can allow the `discovery` of 3 thousand year old graves but bones buried 30 years ago do not have `permission` to come to the surface… Perhaps their `discovery` will not be done by INFORCE but by the families of the missing persons from both sides if they decide to work together… That is, if they dare to bring down the game of `pretense`…
