Lyn Parker, British High Commisoner to the Republic, has come out saying that the controversial Annan Plan is not immutable.

"some significant changes in areas of particular concern to one side or the other".

This was one of the points made by British High Commissioner, Lyn Parker, in a speech to the New Cyprus Association, in Limassol. The British diplomat stressed that if there is to be a solution in the coming years, the new political leadership in the north will have to be seen in the south more as "potential future partners" rather than natural adversaries.

I agree with this one. We should take the Greek concerns into consideration. Instead of keeping the Turkish army for, say 20 years, there could be an independent court which would deal with the humanrights abuses against Turkish Cypriots by Greek or vice versa. Also, the derrogations imposed on the Greek Cypriots moving to north should be eased, but not be lifted completely. Remember, each side has its own concerns about the solution. One should not ignore the other.

ok so is the reason why Greek Cypriots should not be allowed to live anywhere they want in their own country because
a) that will eliminate political equality or
b) because you just dont want ot live with them?


remember there was a way in which anyone can live anywhere they want wihtout infringing on the political equality of the two communities...

Listen what is wrong with you people, if we are all part of the E.U, which the ROC is and the TRNC wants to be, how can you restict anyone never less any cypriot in his own country, I SAY OPEN THE BORDERS WIDE AND LET ALL CYPRIOTS (GC, TC EC AND WHATEVER ELSE OUT THERE) TO GO TO THEIR HOMES, no one wants war and we all want peace but why should we walk all over their god given rights to live where they want, this is not right and i plead with my community to get that sort of thinking out of their minds.

magikthrill, you cannot ignore the security concerns of Turkish Cypriots. There is an extraordinary situation in Cyprus . There are two communities who had fought with each other for years and had been living seperately for 30 years. You cannot just lift the border and tell the Greeks to live whereever they want. This will take time. As you know derrogation is something temporary not permanent. So, I meant easening them, but not lifting them completely (of course they will be lifted in say 10 years, I dont know).

brother what you say is something idealistic, something that should be the case. But it is not, and not realistic.

Nice to hear somone speaking some hope as it doesn't help everytime i hear Turkish officials saying "they've done everything they can on Cyprus." Feels like there saying there not prepared to budge on anything on the last Annan plan which feels like a poor excuse.

Nevetheless, hopefully soon everybody will be able to live where ever they want and i'm sure Mr Rauf Denktash will be very happy to be swamped with Greek Cypriot neighbours after all these years. Arrgh, what a retirement that would be.

temporary derrogations are also find. unfortunately most of the people who support residence restritioncs don't want them to be temporary but rather permanent, which I think is ridiculous.

Exactly that was what I am saying. It is something illogical and unfair when a Greek Cypriot could settle freely in Estonia but could not do the same in his own country!
