Just the response I expected - how predictable!

Thank your lucky stars you were not shopping in the 'Murder Mile' around 1956/58. You would have seen real hospitality then.

Was that when the British were shooting Cypriot school children :(

Servicemens wives were not. Beyond that I am not saying who was killing who.

Servicemen's wives & Cypriot Schoolchildren? You are both joking right? Please elaborate.

Whatever country the Briish try to control ends up as a shooting gallery.

So your telling me that British soldiers were shooting Cypriot school children & Servicemen's wives? You got a link to back up that claim ?
As if!

Some info might be gleened from here (above link) towards the end.

I'd already read this Deniz. No indication of killings of minors, but very interesting nonetheless.

THE BRAVE GENERAL AND HIS HEROIC SOLDIERS

A seven-years-old child was murdered in Larnaca by the “brave-hearted” men of Harding, who, unable to face the fighters of Cyprus ordered his soldiers to shoot even the little children, thinking that in this way he would scare the people of Cyprus.

Cervantes’ hero, Don Quixote, mistakenly attacked wind-mills because he had the illusion that he was attacking live enemies. Harding, whose mind no longer thinks clearly because of his many defeats, ordered the shooting of little children, defenseless creatures, because he knew that none of them could offer resistance.

The little boy’s murder occurred like this:

There was a demonstration in Larnaca. English soldiers armed like lobsters were afraid to approach St. Lazarus square where the demonstrators awaited them with rocks in their hands. In order to intimidate the crowd they preferred to show their “heroism” by shooting at a shop in a side street of Agis Onisiforos where four or five children had gathered.

Harding’s troops murdering a young child…how brave! The soldiers realized that there would be a protest and ran away as if they were chased by the ghost of the dead child.

The general protest was so great that even an English woman who knew the innocent child burst into tears when she learned of the murder.

This thread has taken a bit of a turn, but I'm learning more about the Cyp situation which is very helpful.

Hi O. No the original post mentioned Murder Mile in Nicosia and you posted "was that when the Brits were shooting Cyp School children?"

I couldn't find evidence of any in Nicosia, the article here is quoting Larnaca. It nevertheless is an interesting piece of anti-UK propaganda. Breaking the whole article down it is, in my opinion, making a mountain out of the proverbial molehill. It is 100% biased and has very cleverly worded embellishing. I must admit I hadn't found this piece before you posted it though :)

GCs and TCs were indeed killed by British forces. There is no propaganda about it.

Not arguing that fact Deniz. There were plenty of people on all sides that were killed, I understand that. I was just saying that the article is written in a way to incite hatred, that's all. eg ("The general protest was so great that even an English woman who knew the innocent child burst into tears when she learned of the murder") It wasn't the powerful protest that moved the woman to tears, but the fact that it was a child that she knew had been killed, which would have happened regardless of the nationality.
" The soldiers realized that there would be a protest and ran away as if they were chased by the ghost of the dead child" What a load of bollox! They porb retreated expecting a large backlash, nothing to do with the ghost of the dead child.

I'm certainly not condoning the action, but spin should be kept out of such matters, as the severity of the atrocity is enough to provoke a natural response on its own.

Oh yes. Spin. Thats media again. Both sides have sensationalised the killings. But it is tragic nevertheless. There can be no limit to grief, esp. when you lose a loved one. The press love it.
