Turkish Cypriot FM slams France over military drills

France, due to take over of the rotating EU presidency on June 1, should revise its stance regarding the planned joint military exercise with the Greek Cypriot administration, Turkish Cypriot FM Turgay Avci told the Anatolian Agency on Wednesday.

Avci denounced France's participation in the June 2-6 drills as a partial stance in favour of the Greek Cypriots at a time when efforts are under way to revive talks to reunify the island.

"France's participation in the exercises cannot be seen as a sign of goodwill at a time when France is preparing to take over the EU presidency and when a negotiation process is under way in Cyprus," he told Anatolia in an interview, calling on Paris to "carefully review" its decision.

The Greek Cypriots announced last week it would be holding search and rescue and crisis management exercises, called "Argonaftis", involving the sea and air forces of Greek Cypriots, Greece and France.

The drills will be conducted in the ethnically divided island's Greek Cypriot south and international waters in the Mediterranean.

"France should analyse (its decision) once again," Avci said. "They have already been imposing unfair isolation on Turkish Cypriots. There are unfulfilled pledges. Such one-sided approaches providing advantage to Greek Cypriots, reinforcing and pampering them, are not proper attitudes," he added.

He also said last week's meeting between the leaders of Turkish and Greek Cypriot sides was favorable. However, he said Turkish Cypriots would not accept a timetable with an unlimited period to elongate the process.

Talat and Christofias met last Friday to review preparations for starting direct talks, but disagreed on a start date. Greek Cypriot government officials have said that negotiators had not made enough progress on some of the more sensitive issues to start direct talks.

"We are in favor of a comprehensive, fair and equal solution in the shortest time. Talks can not be unlimited or indefinite," Avci said.

If anything it’s the Turkish Cypriots who should revise their direction because so far it has brought them nothing but 3rd world humiliation after three decades of harboring Turkey against what they call their “country”.

Those who don’t want progress and prosperity should go live the FULL Turkish experience IN Turkey instead of wasting progressive people’s time here, and those that foolishly think they can have BOTH worlds in one will slowly but surely sink to the reality that the two worlds are mutually exclusive.

I liked the description “crisis management exercises”… it looks like even little Cyprus has learned a thing or two from the Americans about media distortion...

Voilà !

Finally the Esprit de Corps. The raison d'être of why we are in the EU. The bête noire for Turkey.

En Garde Turkey. France can have a carte blanche to deal with you. You have made one faux pas too many! This is a dégustation of things to come. A soupcon for your delectation.

Halil ...... Turkish coffee? Au contraire, make mine a café au lait. Bon appétit!

Out with the Ottoman and in with the chaise longue. 8)

You no like? Tough! C'est la vie.

Bon Voyage Turkey

Turgay Avci: “The development of the TRNC and its opening to the world will not stop because there are negotiations
Turkish Cypriot daily Halkin Sesi newspaper (29.05.08 ) reports that Turgay Avci, self-styled minister of foreign affairs of the breakaway regime, has alleged that the fact that France, which will take over the term presidency of the EU, is organizing common military exercises with “south Cyprus, which is an EU member”, is not a behaviour showing good will. In a statement to Anatolia news agency, Mr Avci called on France to re-examine its stance.

The paper writes that Mr Avci was referring to “Argonaftis” military manoeuvre, which will be carried out in international waters by France, Greece and the Republic of Cyprus between 2 and 6 June. Mr Avci pointed out to the objections to the relations of the EU member states with the Republic of Cyprus and added that the Turkish Cypriots do not see positively such relations.

Referring to the statement issued after the meeting between President Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat on 23 May, Mr Avci said that it is positive and added that the fact that there are meetings between the sides is good. He said that their principle is to follow the road determined with Turkey and proceed in the direction of the commonly established policy.

Mr Avci noted that if President Christofias wants to delay the process and the negotiations and have a process without timetable, this will not be accepted. He alleged that the continuation of the process for another 30 years suits the Greek Cypriot side, but not the Turkish Cypriot side. He said that “the development of the TRNC and its opening to the world will not stop because there are negotiations”.

He stressed: “We are doing whatever we can for the growth, upgrading, increase the structuring and develop the institutional structure of the TRNC. On the other hand, the negotiations are continuing, but these negotiations cannot be open-ended, with no limit and last forever”.

Avci 1: "France's participation in the exercises cannot be seen as a sign of goodwill at a time when France is preparing to take over the EU presidency and when a negotiation process is under way in Cyprus,"

Avci 2: “the development of the TRNC and its opening to the world will not stop because there are negotiations”.

The above statements came from the same person!
...and he critisizes EU members CY, GR & FR and askes from the internationally CyR to stop any contact or co-operation with the outside world due to negotiations while at the same time he will not stop promoting his bastard child...as a gesture of goodwill.
That's the turkish logic!
