Actually, when APOEL was playing AEK Athens three years ago for a Champions League qualifier, a (very short) woman was a linesman (assistant referee, whatever).
I was on the stands, and Main_Source isn't far off in what he is imagining...

Hi Joking

Unless you can speak Greek you will find it very diffcult to keep control; keeping control of one Cypriot man is difficult enough, keeping control of twenty two....!

Hi everyone, hope you are all well, I really appreciate the comments, thankyou. Main Source please forgive my ignorance, could you translate please? Hazza what is my PM?
Anyway I fully intend to work very hard and learn the language, however is football not a universal game, this is why we give hand signals to show what decisions we give, I'm quite sure that all referees have to cope with language difficulties, maybe someone out there has experience of this and would like to give me some advice. Female referees and female footballers are becoming prevalent in the UK and around the world, I think that now Cyprus is part of the EU, it must surely follow that females will be involved in careers that have predominantly been a male bastion, sporting or otherwise. It may take time, but I have a few more years before I hang up my boots, so hopefully I will have the privilege to be part of the breakthrough. I must comment to the non believers, it makes no difference whether you are male or female to referee a football match, it is about law application, common sense and control. Thanks to all for helping me find out information.

Cheers guys Jo

Dont agree lol...this is football. Its a game of testosterone...use common sense..the players and manager arent gonna have the right respect for a woman...especially in Cyprus.

and the translation means something like "woman, are you bought?"..but its in Cypriot and doesnt sound as funny when translated. [/quote]

Hi everyone, Main Source I must take issue with you on your last comment, since when did anyone get respect just for turning up? Surely it is something that is earnt through participation and demonstration. In this country when I first started out, the majority of players would fall about laughing and make general observations that were uncomplimentary, over time, things have changed significantly, a player knows a decent referee when he gets one and again it has nothing to do with gender. No I am not bought, just pioneering.

Hazza have loads of questions, but need to work out how to send to you without boring everyone else, thank you so much for your efforts.

Any way a question for all, is football played at grass roots level in Cyprus like our Saturday and Sunday League?

Cheers Jo
