What is certain is that doping was not invented by the Greeks. It was initially mass used during the cold war so the "west" and "east" could compete in the athletics part of the cold war, and then as sports became more and more commercialized and the athletes had a lot of money to gain from their victories they started investing more and more money in artificially enhancing their performance.

The Olympic spirit as it was known in the real true Olympics today simply does not exist among most of the professional athletes.
