That opera is played for laughs?

Is this how great Operas are treated in 'civilised' Cyprus? Disgraceful.

I saw a performance of 'il Seraglio' in Kyrenia Castle some years ago. I went there with my nieces, a bit apprehensive. It was just marvelous. The setting was even better. May be not as rich as Covent Garden but this is an 'illegal' non-existent state.

Have not been to one in Cyprus, although I can't see how they could get any worse to the ones in the UK....

We used to go regularly (mostly through work  ) but it was unbearable, institutionalized, legalised torture! Even sat through some of the "Greats" .... Heard better arias in the Maternity Wards

May I suggest that you are more in tune with 'Greek Tragedies'. They seem to turn you on.

It was an open air opera at Pafos harbour – not at Covent Garden, not at Epidauros with its perfect acoustics…

I’m not sure what your expectations could have been but the fishing boats were just a few meters behind the audience, the thriving harbour restaurants and bars just a few hundred meters away, the flight path from Pafos airport almost directly overhead and the stage was built in the ruins of an ancient fort…

Personally, I thought the scenery was excellently built around the fort and gave me an opportunity to visualise the scene being portrayed. I thought the orchestra were great and the singing on the whole excellent…

Was it perfect? No.

Did it move me? Oh god yes!

And surely that is the point?

Well if that's what you want from an opera performance you certainly got it. I like to see an operea properly presented and sung. With a storyline like Butterfly one should come away feeling emotionally drained not regretting the amount you had to spend on the ticket and the petrol to get there. I am assuming that you are joking also?

No... I'm not joking...

And more to the point, you are in the minority by a long, long way... 8)

This opera traumatised me.
As a birthday treat I took my friends down west end London.
However at the end they were so bored we left after just 15 minutes.
Lol that will teach me to go for the cinema option.
