EOKA...

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

EOKA...

Postby connor » Fri Sep 12, 2008 1:17 pm

So educate me please...

Were EOKA a bunch of terrorist thugs..? Or were they heroes that need to be looked up to..?

I have brought this subject up on many occasions over the past 20 years with various GC's. I have been told that the majority of Cypriots disagreed with EOKA and their methods but were afraid to speak out against them for fear of their lives and that of their families.

I quote one as saying...."We did not know who was or who was not a member of EOKA so we had to watch what we said out loud for fear of a bomb being planted in our gardens.."

Quite a few have also said they wish Cyprus was still a British colony.

No doubt your comments will be interesting......

Depends who you speak to, or what you Google. In our village, it is not discussed in public, to many bad memories.

Apart from the AKEL , all Cypriots supported EOKA .
The communists were against EOKA from day one.
EOKA , were a handful of committed fighters numbering about 300 men and supported by the political wing PEKA
and the youth movement ANE .
Their goal was the liberation of Cyprus from British rule and Union with Greece .
They were a well disciplined group and morally respectable. The nonsense talked about shooting people in the back are just that. One or two victims ONLY .

You know nothing about this and nothing about EOKA, I suggest you keep schtum when speaking about a country's national heroes in said country's forum.

The G/Cs have every right to demand independence .AN ARMED STRUGGLE WAS THE only OPTION THEN , the British having made their famous statement on Cyprus in a House of Commons debate on Cyprus by unequivocally stating the word NEVER in response to calls for granting Cyprus independence.

Connor might check this out.

When I was 8-10 years old, two of by friends were two young men, around 25 yr old. One was Andrico, the other Andreas(?). They were artisans, making from scratch house furniture items. Their workshop was at the entrance of Kato Anglissidhes next to the old Olive press. I would spend hours in the hot summer days plying their trade, making the most beautiful wardrobes, putting on the lacquer. The smell of the freshly cut timber will always be in my nostrils. I reckoned that Andrico was an exact copy of Omar Sharif (younger version), with darker hair and thin moustache.

One day we heard that they had been arrested as being members of the EOKA. To know them, youd think that they would never hurt a fly. I never saw them again. In 1960, Independence came and we heard that they were paid some money by the Brits and left for Australia. I think it was they who taught me the first rudimentary Greek I learnt.
Their arrest was after a bomb went off near Larnaca (Larnaca-Limasol road). I dont know of their involvement, but the English soldiers had to arrest someone.

I should have asked if they ever returned to Cyprus. More homework for Connor.

There was in our village one GC casualty of EOKA too. He was rich. Just back from the USA. He was called 'Americanos'.

My grandfather was a tomearhis (region commander) of EOKA despite him being a senior member of AKEL. His son (my godfather) was only 15 and he'd dress him up as a girl to carry ammo in his basket past the British guards. They used this method for at least 2 months.

Kudos to you Miltiades, because you have just made inroads to your redemption! At long last I find a post in which I agree with you 100%.
