The two leaders have been continuing talks since the 3rd of September with the aim of bringing about a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

`We are continuing the full-fledged negotiations but the Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias is not actually continuing full-fledged negotiations` the President told a conference titled `Latest developments in Cyprus and Negotiation Process at the Izmir University of Economics.

Accusing the Greek Cypriot Administration of trying to change the basis created with UN parameters, Mr Talat said `For example, it signed an agreement with Britain. It made Britain to accept its thesis on issues we were discussing. It signed a similar agreement with Russia on issues we were discussing `.

The President made it clear that the way to bring about a Cypriot solution to the problem cannot be this, accusing the Greek Cypriot Leader of playing for time.

The President stressed that the federal republic to be established would be a new state and that it is out of question for the `Republic of Cyprus` to be transferred into a new state.

Referring the political equality as the most important issue for the Turkish Cypriot Side, he said `this will be the political equality of the two communities and not the two states`.

Mr Talat also made it clear that the Turkish Cypriot Side wants the Treaties of Guarantee and Alliance to continue.

`Whenever the Treaties of Guarantee and Alliance is brought to the agenda, Hristofias gets carried away. He says that the EU is providing enough security.

But we have martyrs and missings who were killed between the years of 1963 and 74 when Cyprus was under the protection of the UN Security Council` he reminded, stressed that the Turkish Cypriot Side would not agree the protection of the UN, the EU or Britain.

But, the President noted that he was still hopeful for a solution as the sides were still at the negotiation table.

`As we are at the table, solution is possible and for me, the chances are high`, he added.

Can you pls remind me who this Talat is? I am out of Cyprus some years and i can not remember his position in the political system of the Island.

Hes the guy with 50% of the say in whether we unite or not.
