Can I take a hire car from South to North Cyprus?

Postby rastan » Sat Nov 29, 2008 6:19 am

Having recently enjoyed an absolutely fabulous holiday in North Cyprus & having spent only one day in South Nicosia (due to not being allowed to take our hire car across the border) Next year we plan to return to Cyprus & we really would like to explore much more of the south, but also visit several places in the north that we didn't have time to vist.
We are considering having one weeks holiday in the south & then a second week in the north, but it really would be a lot simpler if we could fly into/out of Larnaca (cheaper too!) and hire a car there and travel into North Cyprus in our hire car.
Does anyone here have any experience of taking a hire car across the border? When I was looking at car hire in the TRNC I read that it was possible to take the car to the south, but in reality the car hire company would not allow us to do so!

Rastan, when you visit another country it would be good for you to know a thing or two about its history.

In Cyprus there is only one state, the Republic of Cyprus, and there are no borders. What divides Cyprus is a cease fire line which separates the free areas of the Republic of Cyprus and the areas which are under illegal occupation by Turkish troops since 1974 when Turkey invaded our island.

Regarding your question, most decent companies will not want their cars taken to the occupied areas. You can take the car there without taking their permission but you have to remember that the insurance will not cover you there and if anything happens to the car there you will be personally responsible.

Ignore the usual propaganda crap repeated by Piratis...the answer to your question is yes you can Fly to Larnaca and hire a car there to travel all over Cyprus including north.
You do not need to hide the fact you will be traveling all around the island including north..
The insurance you will get from the hiring company will not cover you in the north so they will make you sign a document accepting the responsibility for any damage occurring in the north that's all..
You will then need to take a separate insurance document at the checkpoint when crossing over to cover you in the north.
There are hundreds of ROC registered cars traveling to the north every week..
Have a nice time.

What I said regarding Cyprus are the precise facts. What exactly do you dispute?

Regarding car hire companies you just confirmed what I said. He can take it on his own risk, and the decent companies do not recommend their clients to do so.

The man asked a simple question which required a simple answer....
No need to lecture him on the recent history of the island.

No,you did your propaganda first then answered the question.
Since he recently visited the island,he obviously has an idea of the situation.
If he wanted someone to "correct his misconceptions" he would have posted in "Cyprus Problem" section not "Cyprus Tourism"

Give it a break and use your energy on Cyprus Problem section...

iceman, propaganda is what this person was obviously exposed to when he visited the occupied areas, which is why he is talking about "trnc" and borders.

Such a well written piece, with astutely presented detail.

One wonders why you couldn't solve such an apparently "simple" problem yourself.

One week in South Cyprus you say and One week in North Cyprus ... Well, well well! ... most people would hire ONE car in the "SOUTH" and another car in the "NORTH" and be done with!

So maybe I overestimated your intelligence or you leave me confused as to your motives, by writing such an otherwise knowledgeable piece about this Country that is so clearly DIVIDED in your vacation-filled mind!

The following post that I have found in a thread on another forum will be of interest to you.

http://forum.virtualtourist.com/discuss ... ssion.html

Do visit North Cyprus - and stay if you can! I love the stunning scenery, laid back feel, the easier driving than south Cyprus, and the cheaper prices too. Yes, you can drive a hire car from south to North Cyprus (just not the other way round). When you stop at the border, you simply buy some additional insurance valid in North Cyprus, and off you go - easy! We booked our car hire online at cyprus-car.com in advance, had it delivered to our accommodation in Paphos (free), and drove it across the border no hassle. Enjoy your stay!

I think the best thing to do would be to find the e-mail addresses of some car hire companies, and direct this question to them.
