Greek Orthodox Religion Beliefs

Postby Leon » Thu May 26, 2005 5:55 pm

Since they are some of the most-debated topics in religion, what does the Greek Orthodox religion say about: abortion, homosexuality and divorce?

Is the religion itself closer to Catholic? If so, why is it called Christian Orthodox?

Thanks,
Leon :D

Check this out Leon, should have all you need to know. As a 'convertor' to Orthodoxy, I think the services are closer to Catholicism than many in the Orthodox Church like to admit. As someone who was christened Church of England, an Orthodox ceremony is about as far from a protestant ceremony as you can get.

One of the main differences is that Catholics see the pope as having a special relationship with god...althugh during the middle ages, many nobles bought the priveledge to become pope.

The crusades also caused a great rift between the Orthodox and Catholic churches.

i believe catholics and orthodox christians have the same beliefs on abortion, divorce and homosexuality except the catholics are bigger nazis on this issue. if im not mistaken you can get married in an orthodox church up to three times.

also the main reason the churches split was because the orthodox christians refused to believe that any human being is superior to another (The way the pope is) translation: the pope was gaining too much better next to the patriarch and this could not be tolerated ;)

As far as I know abortion and homosexuality are definite no-no's... I think the church realises that divorce happens, but if you're divorced I don't believe you can remarry in church... the ceremony is about joining for life, not just for Christmas...

The Orthodox Church does not allow cremation.

<That is reserved strictly for the Souvla!>

And what if you 'betray' these rules?

I'd like to be a Greek Orthodox but I don't agree on everything. I'm in two minds about abortion. Some could argue that it's murder, which quite frankly, it is, but I'd rather a child aborted than be brought up in an un-loving home. I mean if somebody was raped and fell pregnant I could understand exactly where they're coming from if they decided to abort the child; I have nothing against homosexuals at all! I'm not gay, but my mother is a lesbian and I don't have a problem with it, most of her friends are lesbians and I don't see the fuss about it, it's just two people in love, like someone would be in love with his wife; what a shame, I want to be cremated  :D.

What should I do :?:

Leon.

Postby demetriou_74 » Mon May 30, 2005 12:49 pm

i have been christianed and go to church for nemosinos (if thats how you spell it) but i yet to have any real reason to believe in god. if he wanted be to believe he would slap me round the face. you control your own life Leon dont be one of those people who uses "God's Will" as an excuse for doing something.

i personaly dnt mind abortion or re marriage. being gay does not bother me as long as they dont try to impose their views on me. EG That wanker who was in big brother last year.

subject of gay big brother people what is that crazy dude in the paper dressed like a INDIAN WOMAN when he is a turkish man. he has issues.

Leon ask one of your greek school teacher they should know. hope i can help
