moving to cyprus

Postby cornishbabe » Sun Jun 05, 2005 10:34 am

Hi, I am new to this so please bear with me!!!

I am visiting cyprus in November with my partner with a view to purchasing a property. We want to move out next year but will both have to work ( unfortunately ) Can anyone advise us of the best areas to visit where year round employment would be easier to obtain.

Also, anyone who has already moved to cyprus any help/advice would be most appreciated.

We have an appointment the 2nd day we are there to look at properties but would really like to hear from those of you who have already made the plunge.

Hi

What part of the island are you looking at? We bought a house in October last year in Frenaros which is just 15mins from Protaras. We are flying out permanently on 28th August and just going to rent until our house is ready in October. My husband is in Sales and has a few leads to contact when we get out there. We have been over to Cyprus quite a few times and have met some really nice people who have become friends. We are sorting out our container at the moment to take our belongings over and once that is sorted its more or less Cyprus here we come.

Happy hunting.

Hi Cornishbabe.

Just a few questions....

1) Are there any kids involved (for schooling)

2) I know you will need to work, but what is it you want from Cyprus? beaches? nightlife? expat community? historical places? peace and quiet?

3) does yourself or your partner specialise in any particular field of employment?

HI CORNISHBABE

PROPERTY PRICES IN CYPRUS ARE GOING TO DROP DUE TO HAVING PRICED THEMSELVES OUT OF THE MARKET.

I WOULDN'T BUY ANY PROPERTY HERE JUST NOW AS YOU'LL STILL BE PAYING TOP END PRICES.

THE COST OF PROPERTY NEXT YEAR WILL BE A LOT CHEAPER THAN WHAT IT IS AT THE MOMENT, MAYBE EVEN SOONER THAN THAT!

GOOD LUCK!

Thankyou to ex-pat, Hazza and Branjo for replying.

Both my Partner and myself have extensive sales/retail/customer service experience. Iam currently employed as a travel agent and my partner works for a leading electrical retailer.

Until Feb this year I was Assistant Manager at The Bodyshop in Truro, so who knows, that may be a poosibility for me, also estate agents etc. We are willing to try anything, within reason, but dont really want to end up working all hours in bars and cafes.

We were initially looking at areas in the Paralimni area but need year round employment so maybe Limassol/Larnaca areas may be better.

We want to be fairly close to a beach but not right in the tourist areas, a little bit inland will be okay. Would like a bit of both ex-pat and local culture.

No kids so schools not an issue.

We will not be selling our house in Cornwall will rent it out so property we will be able to buy will depend on how much we can borrow!!

Hazza, we have been warned that property prices will rise in latter part of 2005, how do you know that they are going to drop?

Finally, very important factor we will be bringing our cat with us any one already done this? She is very nervous of other people I would prefer that she be able to travel with us on the plane. I have heard that this can be done on certain airlines, any advise, hints or tips would be most appreciated.

Thanks to everyone

As us Cornish say CHEERS!

It's made-up nonsense that property prices are going to rise - this is to encourage buyers to part with the cash sooner rather than later. The reason for this tactic is due to the fact that property sales here in Cyprus have plummeted due to the prices being hiked up way too much.

Developments have ground to a halt, everywhere! Nobody is buying in advance they way they used to, so they made up this false rumour to try to get people to buy now.

What I mean by buying in advance, developers used to have their properties sold before they were completed, thus giving them the money in advance to complete the projects - it's just not happening anymore!

Give it a good few months and prices will drop.

I dont think property prices will drop. Im not an expert but although they have risen sharply the last 5 years still I do not expect any fall on the prices.

moving to cyprus

Postby annecollings » Tue Jun 07, 2005 7:51 am

I think you should rent here for a while to get a real feel for the place, to see if you can find employment and to see which area you want to settle in.

Remember wages are still low compared to UK. You may stand a good chance to get work in the travel industry.... Not sure about electrical for your partner - if he was qualified electrician that would be very useful here.

I have been to and from Cyprus with two dogs but cannot comment about actually travelling with a cat. I have a friend who bought a few cats with her but they are mainly house cats and use a litter tray for toileting. You will have to be careful (and I'm sorry to bring up the subject to those who are bored of it) if your cat wanders around the locality, for fear of poisons! As I said, I don't know about actually travelling on the plane with a cat, I guess you would have to ask the actual carriers. There are moving companies in UK that arrange travel for pets. But I don't think it would do too much harm to travel as my dogs did in a pressurised hold. May be you can speak to your vet who may consider a mild sedative to relax the cat - I'm not sure about this.

Any way best of luck
Regards.

Property prices here in Cyprus are way too high, especially considering the cost of living is also high and wages are so low

I have also noticed that there is little or no construction work being done lately, ex_pat could be onto something.

I agree that you should rent here for a period before buying, just to make sure that it is the life for you, as it is quite different from the UK.

Also agree about keeping your cats inside. Not just for poisoning reasons, but also because I did some work for a charity that used to catch cats, neuter them and drive them miles away to be released. I was never too keen on the last part, imagine they get somebody's pet!

Rant over. Enjoy Cyprus! :D

Hi,
I have to agree with michalis5354 on the property side, I have been looking to buy (in Limassol) and most of the propertys have been sold before the house is finished!
I think you should start looking as the more you investigate and the more you look around different areas and prices the more you will understand how the property market works here in cyprus.
Good luck and happy hunting.
