ADSL Price Comparison (UK vs Cyprus)

Postby BigDutch » Wed Jun 08, 2005 1:09 pm

Again, was reading in Cyprus Living MSN group and have copied my post over here for comments from you guys n gals ....

Having only looked at Cyprus pricing on the official Cyta sites i have calculated as follows - is this correct ?
_____________________________________________________________
>> Cyprus <<
ISP : Cyta Net - NetRunnerplusIP 1Mbps/128kbps (down/up)
: Setup - CY£10
: Per Month - CY£35
ADSL : i-choice 1000
: Setup - CY£40
: Per Month - CY£15

All prices are ex VAT.

1st Year Ownership @ CY£650
Subsequent Years @ CY£600
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
>> UK <<

ISP : Pipex - Solo 1000 1Mbps/256kbps (down/up)
: Install - Free (new customer)
: Per Month - UK£19.99
ADSL : Connection included

All prices are ex VAT.

1st Year Ownership @ UK£240
_____________________________________________________________
Assuming that standard PSTN lines are already installed and having chosen as close as possible packages (similar speeds except Cyta has less 'up' speed, static IP address, unlimited usage).

At a "worst case" exchange rate (0.80) the 1st year in Cyprus will cost approx UK£750, and best rate (0.85) it will be a touch of UK£700.

Am i getting the wrong end of the stick here ?

Well, BT have promised broadband to almost all the surface area of the UK by the end of next year.

Cytanet, in the same time, will have coverage of 10% of the island (part of the cities and some of the suburbs).

In the first case, there is economy of scale. In the second, there is an incompetent administration. What do you expect? As it is, I frequently encounter DoS because of overloading of the links off the island. If everyone surfed with broadband, the system would grind to a halt.

Any reason why you need the NetRunnerplusIP?
NetRunnerfast is 12 pounds/month and no installation fee. SpiderADSL is 11 pounds per month.

The ADSL setup by Cyta is also free now.

Cyprus really is missing a trick by not wiring up the island sooner... just look at the Estonian example, almost the whole country is wired for hi-speed access and as a result some hi-tech companies are locating some facilities there (the lower wages naturally help, but the infrastructure to operate is key). If Cyprus determined to wire the whole island, it might be able to reduce its dependence on tourism by encouraging hi-tech industry, particularly with such a highly educated potential workforce at hand.

As usual, shame on the slow-thinking, slower-acting Cypriot politicians.

Sad thing is that a lot of Cypriots i have met and discussed commerce with feel that they are going to be a hub between Europe/Africa and The Middle East, physically the location is good with weekly container shipping from Lemessos to North Europe this is possible.

However until the data movement is also improved drastically Cyprus will remain an also ran.

Of course any improvement of tele-comms for commerce/trade will bring benefits of higher spec service at a cheaper price to the Cyprus residents as well !

So were my sums correct(ish) then ?

Dutch, a lot of Cypriots have gone into the EU project with high expectations about what it will bring and very little understanding of the actual consequences. I think many in commerce particularly feel that by entering the EU, the benefits will fall into their laps and Cyprus, by virtue of location alone will become the nexus between Europe and the Middle East. In terms of location, you are right, Cyprus would be poised to be that link in the chain, but these days if the infrastructure isn't available or is too expensive, commerce can easily skip by Cyprus and establish itself elsewhere. For example, if Lebanon makes concerted efforts to become an e-centre, it may be more convenient to establish operations there rather than in Cyprus.

With the second largest container fleet in the EU, Cyprus should be positioning itself like Malta as the transition hub for commerce from all over the east destined for Europe. But without the accompanying networks in place, it'll lose out and quickly. Wake up Cypriot bureaucrats, by concentrating all your thoughts on the Cyprus problem, you're missing out on the real benefits of EU membership.

Anyway dutch, having quickly looked at the CYTA site, your sums seemed pretty fair to me.
