Life as a musician in Cyprus

Postby MickKnipfler » Wed Jun 22, 2005 7:19 pm

I'm thinking about some time in the future taking my retirement in Cyprus and working part time as a musician in a few bars. How much of that kind of thing is there in Cyprus? what are the best locations? and how much would I be able to chage for an evenings music?

I think this is fairly common in the larger towns. Whenever I visit Paphos there are always plenty of bars with live musicians playing, at night :) I've no idea how much you could earn, my guess would be between GBP £100-£150 per night (9pm -> 3am) for a talented musician pulling good crowds, but this really is a number I pulled out of thin air :?

you will be more successful if you apply in a greek tavern to work as a musician. of course this means you will have to learn a new kind of music .why i recommend this is bc greek taverns are open almost everyday of the week all year round, while bars and etc have live music mainly during summer and not everyday of the week. not to mention that in the tavern you will most propably given free food also.

Another alternative, is the hotels. There are a few acts that the hotels keep calling back because they are loved by the guests. One person that springs to mind is a guy called Andrew who is a Dean Martin impersonator. He started of with 1 booking a week at the Princess Hotel in Larnaca late last summer. Now he is a very sought after act.

I have to say, he is very very good, BUT, there are opportunities there if you really want them.
