Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis climbed 25 places in the ATP World Tour ranking after securing the championship at the men’s single at the Odlum Brown Van Open over the weekend and now ranks 111th with 580 points.

The title is Baghdatis’ first at any level since triumphing at the ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament in Zagreb in February 2007 and gives him a boost in the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings, moving him up to No. 111.

Baghdatis has been seeded fourth in the LG & T Tennis Challenger in Binghamton, New York, and will open his campaign against Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz. Also in the field are Denis Istomin, Paul Capdeville, Chris Guccione and Carsten Ball.

After the LG & T Tennis Challenger in Binghamton, New York, Baghdatis will return to Cyprus for some rest and training, ahead of the national team’s participation in the Davis Cup.

Cyprus will take part in Group I of Europe/Africa zone of the Davis Cup after its great victory over Ireland. It will face Finland during play-offs from 18-20 of September.
