Holidaying in Protaras

Postby Cypru5 » Sun Sep 06, 2009 9:39 pm

Hello All,

Its my first time in Cyprus (at the end of the month), I'll be staying in Protaras. Can you tell me more about;

Any public transport links (esp to Larnaca and Paphos)
    Any ATM's
Any nightlife (what type of clubs. bars, cinemas, shows, etc)
    Any excursions

I've heard there is a Black Pearl Cptn Jack Sparrow themed cruise that leaves Ayia Napa harbour, is there transport between Protaras and Ayia Napa (assuming its a taxi how much roughly would it cost?)

Thank you :)

There is a bus that runs between Ayia Napa - Protaras - Pernera - Paralimni. 1.50 euros each way

Also a bus to Larnaca from Ayia Napa - I think about 5 euros each way but not very regular.

You'd struggle to get to Pafos on public transport (there are of course no trains in Cyprus)

Eman Travel are the company - I think they have a website with timetables

Plenty of ATMs in Protaras -but take the usual care when using them -there have been scams in the past but nothing reported for some time now and we always use ATMs when we visit.

When travelling to Ayia Napa I'd suggest get the bus there and a taxi back (unless you're leaving quite late as the buses only run till about 8pm I think).

If getting a taxi ALWAYS agree a price before you get in. Meters are rarely used. Last I heard they were charging around 18 euros for Napa to Protaras. Taxis are not cheap in Cyprus.

re. the Pirate Ship - I've heard about this too. Google "Eastern Cyprus forum" and when you reach the site do a search for "Pirates Ayia Napa" and this should tell you more.

Protaras is mainly karaoke and sports bars with a lot of "tribute acts". There are one or two clubs but Napa is the place for all that. Search "Holiday Truths" for more resort reviews.

Excursion wise the one you must do is the Famagusta/Varosha trip. I would recommend the coach trip rather than boat. I won't tell you any more about this as it will be better to go there with an open mind. But rest assured its a very very sad story and one you'll be remembering long after you return.

Enjoy your holiday - Cyprus is a terrific place.

Thanks for the reply, I had a fab holiday!

Taxi from Protaras to Ayia Napa harbour was 15 Euros, had a great day cruise (for all ages) on the Black Pearl http://www.facebook.com/smalljinx?ref=p ... 1572100968.
Its a pity there is no option to get across from east to west, etc without hiring a car. I did however get to go to Larnaca on Independence Day (yes it was busy with Greek families), and saw the beautiful Church of Ayios Lazaros
(built in the 9th century to house the reputed tomb of Lazarus); Limassol (its a working town so only went to the Castle, Cathedral of Ayia Napa, and along the seafront Mols (sculpture) park, and had a fabulous Meze at Michael's Tavern, Erimi http://www.michaels-tavern.com//

In Protaras Fig Tree Bay Beach and see is gorgeous, there weren't any clubs open but there were a couple of karaoke bars, and several smarter cocktails venues such as Jewel, and Bliss.

Overall I found Cyprus to be a cleaner place than any of the other Spanish and Greek resorts I have previously visited, I will definitely be returning!

I bet you could not finish your mezes! I always have to take a 'doggie-bag' home! Did Michael play his bouzouki for you at the end of the night? He is brilliant! Glad to hear that you had a super holiday. :)
