Perhaps the reason for the deterioration you allude to, may be attributable to the fact that some members are trying to emulate the politicians (who ARE doing much talking and NOT listening to the opinions of the people) and as such are convincing themselves that whatever is fed to them through the media MUST be right simply because it hails from those politicians.
Adopting a posture of defence on almost every criticism of one's OWN opinion can never result in an intelligent debate, since the basis of debate MUST involve contrary opinions, or there be no debate.
A frustrated debater is very likely to become an abusive and insulting one, since invariably such a one relies on the opinions of a third party (possibly a political figure) and becomes 'Champion' to the cause of that third party, no quarter given.
Ultimately, any person seriously concerned with the issues that would normally be of interest to him/her, naturally becomes reluctant to express their own views and, if they do, are invariably insulted or verbally abused by the (self-styled) 'Champion' of a previously debated (possibly at a political meeting) issue.
Since THAT issue has already been resolved (or is under discussion at a higher level) it negates the possibility of any concessions being given by 'The Champion' (who holds the opinions of those he wishes to emulate as his own ) and THUS, as you have indicated, there can be no advancement outside of that which has already been decided.
A complete waste of time, a perfect illustration of how intelligent members become disillusioned and ultimately, may even be sucked into the quagmire of filth enjoyed by those who can only resort to ignorant abuse and insult when confronted by any views contrary to their own.(IMHO) :wink
