Exactly, waste their time and they might decide to take away some of yours...

Unlike many W. African countries, the HK police take this kind of thing very seriously and would welcome you to inform them of this attempted fraud. They have a special financial squad. Forward to them the whole message, making sure you send the complete header as well. You will get a message of thanks within two weeks.

I know many such stories from clients. There are many letters like this in circulation. Usual scheme involves either a widow of some wealthy African dictator, or a exiled executive, or even I saw once a letter from 'the government of Nigeria'. Their main point it always that currency regulations or legal reasons does not allow them to receive some big money. They always try to sound desperate, so they can justify addressing a complete stranger. If a person decides to respond, a vivid correspondence starts about the details of 'transaction'. Then at some stage a person receives a 'confirmation' then everything is ready for transfer of funds but some 'small amount' like 15 000 or 20 000 dollars is requested from a person as 'bank processing fees' or something like this. Of course, nobody of those who decide to pay 15 000 commission in order to receive later millions will ever see any money. Because here the story ends :)

Just leave it MT - I'm sure you've got better things to do with your time.

I agree, this hoax/spam (however you wish to call it) is known as the Nigerian connection and as you read in the thread we previously had on the issue, its possible to have good fun with them. But then again
1. you can hardly get any better results than the guy whos story we had linked here :-)
2. why should you waste your time on this
3. take into consideration what Mr. Coumas said

I don't think its worth it.

of course it's a hoax...you have to be daft not to see that.

Anyhow, you could always do what my ex boss did:

Reply and inform him that you are extremeley interested in helping, and would like to speak to him over the telephone. Tell him to call you at a pre-arranged time.

When he calls, ask him to hold....After 5 mins, get back on the phone, and tell him to keep holding...after 10 mins, the same, and so on......

We managed to keep this guy on the phone for 40mins before simply hanging up.

Manni, that would be particularly good if you chose the worst 'on hold' music possible... may I suggest Bryan Adams 'Everything I Do, I Do It For You' on constant repeat... :D
