Did SARKOZYreally say: “TURKEY HAS NO PLACE IN EUROPE”

Benefits and problems from the EU membership.

Did SARKOZYreally say: “TURKEY HAS NO PLACE IN EUROPE”

Postby Agios Amvrosios » Thu Jul 14, 2005 4:46 am

I read this in a translated article from Cumhuriyet (11/7/05)

Saying that he supports the EU membership of Eastern European countries, Sarkozy added, “Since Turkey is not European it has no place in Europe.” Sarkozy is the leader of France’s ruling party and a likely successor to current President Jacques Chirac. /Cumhuriyet/

This is a problem not only for Turkey but for Cyprus, Greece and all countries with borders with Turkey. Greece believe a European Turkey will be a stable, wealthy and cooperative neighbour.

Can any Turkish Speaking forum members please verify this translated Cumhuriyet Article?

AA, here's verification from Yahoo! news. Turkey is playing as a big deal in France because they're already in Presidential election mode with all the players positioning to succeed Chirac. Sarkozy's consistent opposition to Turkish membership is well-documented, whether it owes anything to his father being Hungarian and his mother Greek and Jewish is another question.

Thanks 4 that.

I found this analysis hilarious:

If there were DNAs of countries, I really love to see the comparison of Turkey’s DNA with Sarkozy’s DNA. I wonder which one will be closer to a European. He has Hungarian (most probably like Turks) Y chromosome and a Middle Eastern like X chromosome. On the other hand, Turks are a real mixture, from Balkans to Anatolia. I believe in terms of genetics most of the Turks will be more European than him.

Europe will not allow you in if you do not abide by the rules of entry, at the moment, you are not, it is as simple as that. Edited

How do you fullfill the rules when you ignore UN resolutionscalling for your Army's immediate withdrawal from Cyprus. and when you illegally occupy part of Cyprus which is EU territory. The Turkey which is allowed to enter the EU will be a modern cooperative country.

You think that none of the other countries that have entered the EU have not ignored UN resolutions? If that were a criteria the EU would be a much smaller place.

Not as simple as that.... they can't just pack up and leave without a solution mate..... that would be idiotic to the TC's and other residents of the North security-wise....

You think that none of the other countries that have entered the EU have not ignored UN resolutions? If that were a criteria the EU would be a much smaller place.

UN resolutuons don't seem to mean jack-S in a world where a country can invade another country at will despite the vast majority of the worlds oppostion.....

remember they promised us that if turkish cyprus approve the ANNAN PLAN they will lift TRNC embargo but they breaked one's word. they make this everytime

To be fair.... they are trying and have made some fair efforts to decrease the isolation of the TC community..... even the GC-side has made positive advances in this regard. Don't think they can just recognize the TRNC and lift the embargo..... politically impossible.

he expressed all europen peoples wish. all turkish brother i say u EU wont take us.

In my view, i think it will take a very very very long-time for Turkey to become a fully integrated member of the EU. First-off, Cyprus solutuon has to come through (which by itself can take forever and a half, I seem to have a hunch that the vote for the next plan the GC's will say yes and the TCs will say no) and then Turkeys economical status has to rapidly improve to match...... what Europeans fear the most is mass-immigration from Turkey to the EU... I don't think its a Muslim-Christian thing as the media portrays it....
