I have already provided multiple spam agencies with your email. Maybe you could also provide us with any assets you have in the EU that we could come and occupy for you while your doing the same in northern cyprus*

Not a problem, Not quite a friendly response was it. The total assets i have in the EU is none. The total assets i will have in Cyprus will be none as I plan to rent accomodation. Is this OK with you??

Hi Aidy,

I suggest you ignore Thrill's rather pointed response. I doubt he's spam emailed you as this is an illegal practice anyway. What he's trying to say is that you should make yourself fully aware of the implications of living in northern Cyprus. If you rent accommodation, it is still possible that the place you will rent could be built on land that pre-1974 was the home of a GC forced to move south. If you buy, the pitfalls are even more obvious and I'd suggest you look at the Foreign Office advice on buying in northern Cyprus.

I think it's simply a case of doing some background reading on the Cyprus problem, if you're living there you will be living with it after all.

I'm also not sure what your status would be if your address was in the north. You would probably not be permitted to apply for RoC citizenship since you are not living in territory under its control. The working visa situation is less problematic because as an EU citizen you are entitled to work in the RoC regardless. Whether some of the employers would give you a job if your address is in the north is another question. What I'm trying to say is that this is a very touchy issue for most Cypriots and one that you should approach with a great deal of tact and caution.

Thanks for the more positive response, I am looking into the history of Cyprus, as you say, i will be living in it. My immediate thought of living in the north and working in the south is due to the higher salary in the south, yet lower living costs in the north (which I am led to believe is quite a difference). I am obviously looking for a better life style for me and my family as we just seem to be 'surviving' in Blairs britain.

I know the feeling aidy. But as I said before, despite the lower living costs in the north, you are more likely to confront a certain degree of hostility if it becomes known that you commute from the north to work everyday. I know that under EU rules such discrimination would be illegal, however, that's how things work in Cyprus and should you attempt to push the case, you will be stonewalled and faced with a bureaucratic nightmare.

To be honest, the cost of living in the Republic is cheap compared to the UK, rents especially aren't expensive if you're willing to live outside the city centres. Plus, you'd be more likely to be accepted and welcomed by your GC work colleagues if you are living amongst them rather than potentially living in a house they were evicted from 31 years ago but can still see across the buffer zone. It's a harsh way of looking at it, but you've got to see their point.

My container is packed and ready to go this weds is it a good idea to get insurance on it...the company dont seam to be pushing me to do this......thanks :?

Caroline, you lucky person you, I am not going til January (apart from my brief visit in October). Do you use MSN?? perhaps we could have a chat and you could advise me on anything i may have missed.

Insurance is always a good idea, caroline for your own peace of mind and security make it a must imo.
