Not so much a book as a disturbing cult. A friend of mine has got into these books and every time she comes to visit it's 'Harry Potter this' and 'Harry Potter that' and 'can't wait for the next one to come out'. I guess it's like being a couple without a kid when all your friends have babies... they all turn into 'baby bores'... same difference with Harry Potter.

Witness all the sad sacks camped outside WHSmith waiting for the doors to open. Then we'll see all the middle-aged folk fighting to get the first book... it's all very worrying...

My granddaughter (19 now, but younger then) is an HP fan. She lent me no. 1 and I plodded through it (took me a long time, because I was bored from roughly p. 2 or 3). She then lent me #2 and I read the first few pages before returning it. I simply am so square the I can't understand why these badly-written books have become such a phenomenon.

Haven't read any of the books. The movie was ok, but nothing to go crazy about.

It's called slick-marketing and media-driven promotion...
